Palm Treo Pro Reviews

USAToday reviews the Palm Treo Pro and writes, “There’s no knocking the thin and attractive new Treo Pro hardware — it’s the best-looking Treo to date. I can’t say the same for Microsoft’s cranky and not overly intuitive Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional software, which Palm tweaked with its own shortcuts…Indeed, Treo Pro drove me crazy at times, but it’s still a stylish and competent smartphone. I just don’t know how many people will be chasing after it, especially at such a high price.” Link.

Brighthand reviews the Palm Treo Pro and writes, “Given the state of QWERTY Windows Mobile devices today, its hard to argue strongly for or against the Treo Pro. While it might fall by the wayside for some power users, the fact of the matter is that it’s made more for the casual user who wants a bit more from a productivity device, and doesn’t want to sacrifice usability or style…The Treo Pro is just as comfortable in the board room or at after-work drinks, and keeps you connected without raising much of a fuss in doing so — like a true professional should.” Link.

TreoCentral reviews the Palm Treo Pro and writes, “There’s a lot to like about the Treo Pro and many of those elements don’t come across well in photos or even descriptions. You really will need to get the device in your hands and perhaps even use it for a day or two before you can appreciate just how thoughtful the design is. Hopefully Palm will be able to get enough devices out there in Enterprise circles and get official carrier support from AT&T to enable enough users to experience the Treo Pro directly…Meanwhile, I’ll be keeping my review unit for as long as I can. This is almost exactly the smartphone I’ve been hoping for since the release of the Treo 700w and now that it’s in my hands, I’m loathe to let it go.” Link.

CNET Australia reviews the Palm Treo Pro and writes, “The Palm Treo Pro is a smartphone destined to put a smile on the faces of many business people, and perhaps wipe that self-satisfied smirk off the mugs of BlackBerry and iPhone lovers. It’s been refreshing to see an attractively design Windows Mobile handset without resource-sucking interface modifications slowing down our experience. The battery life could be better and the keyboard is tricky to use, but these complaints haven’t managed to sully our time with the Pro. Those looking for a Windows Mobile handset to take care of business, who don’t care for showy glitz and flare, should consider the Palm Treo Pro.” Link.

Engadget reviews the Palm Treo Pro and writes, “All in all there really isn’t a lot to say here. The Treo Pro is is a solid, if fairly familiar device that will please the business set and few others. For all its good looks and clean lines, this isn’t being marketed to a wide range of customers — not with its software or its price, and because of that the Pro creates a strange dichotomy. It’s the first time in a long time we’ve seen inspired design from the company, but it’s also the first time we’ve seen them market a device destined solely for the upper tier of buyers (and believe us, up there you’ve got some pretty stiff competition). Palm, we hate to repeat ourselves, but here’s what you should be doing right now: getting your new OS out the door, getting it onto a device that follows in the Pro’s design footsteps, and leveraging those hardware costs against a reasonable carrier deal. The Treo Pro is a fine phone, but not the device that will put you back up on top of the pile.” Link.

CrunchGear reviews the Palm Treo Pro and writes, “What are my concerns? That people see the nearly $600 price tag and balk. Nokia can play in the unsubsidized market simply because it’s been working in that space for quite a long time. When we think of the Treo we think of carrier-specific models - to untether the Pro, even though they’ve done the same for the Centro with little fanfare, is distressing. I’ve been promised good things from Palm in the next few months but I worry their time has passed. Android could replaces Palm OS as the geek OS of choice and the iPhone and its various knock-offs are what’s popular with the kids. This is a step in the right direction. Let’s hope the next step comes sooner than later.” Link.

ZDNet reviews the Palm Treo Pro and writes, “I was a bit surprised to see this device, rather than a GSM version of the Palm Treo 800w, but I do like the thinness of the device. I wish the more standard Treo keyboard was used though since I tend to like it better than the Centro-like keyboard. I do understand the SIM-unlocked approach for the enterprise and personally the US$549 price is less than what I have been paying for other SIM-unlocked devices in the past where I have paid US$850+ for a device. The Nokia E71 is an excellent deal at just over US$400 for a US 3G-capable unlocked model though and I would personally buy this instead of the Treo Pro.” Link.

PC Mag reviews the Palm Treo Pro and writes, “The HP iPAQ 910 retains the Editors’ Choice for now. But the Treo Pro’s careful, thoughtful software design makes it a close race. As with the Palm Centro and the Treo 800w, the Treo Pro alone isn’t going to save Palm. But collectively, these devices are evidence of an older, wiser company that’s capable of real evolution, even if it lost its core enthusiast base some time ago. Enterprise users would do well to take a good look at this shrewdly updated, professional Treo. It’s easily my favorite Palm handset release in the past two years.” Link.

Infocenter reviews the Palm Treo Pro and writes, “The Treo Pro brings a long list of standout features that Treo users have been clamoring for ages and it does so in an elegantly stylish design. The Treo Pro is without question a breath of fresh air from Palm. Finally a feature packed device that is friendly on the eyes and won’t weigh down your pocket…While its tough to cough up the extra dough for an unlocked device, it’s nice that Palm is at least making a new model available to customers first. It’s nice not to have to wait through the additional time to market and two year service extensions that usually accompany a carrier purchased smartphone.” Link.

PC Pro reviews the Palm Treo Pro and writes, “There are further annoyances. The phone uses a micro USB to charge and sync instead of the more common mini-USB - we don’t know why - and neither the two-megapixel camera nor the battery life are anything to write home about. With a solid HSDPA connection, push email turned on and medium to light usage, we struggled to eke any more than 24 hours’ use out of the Treo, despite its seemingly high capacity 1,500mAh lithium polymer battery…Palm’s problem with the Treo Pro is that, despite a handful of nice touches, it’s just not as good as the competition in a few key areas. Its keyboard isn’t brilliant and its battery life is below average. We just about prefer it to HP’s beefy 914c, but offerings from Nokia, RIM and HTC are several steps ahead.” Link.

Pocket-lint reviews the Palm Treo Pro and writes, “A good looking design combined with a decent feature set in a device that doesn’t try to be everything to everyone means that this is a Windows device we would happily recommend. This, like the Nokia E71, really takes the fight to RIM’s BlackBerry and its dominance of the QWERTY keyboard arena. It’s been a long time coming, but this could just be Palm’s saving grace.” Link.

InfoSync reviews the Palm Treo Pro and writes, “The Palm Treo Pro features a no-frills build of Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional edition, with no real usability upgrades from Palm. While other manufacturers, notably HTC with the Touch Diamond and Sony Ericsson with the Xperia X1, have taken great pains to improve and perhaps hide the Windows Mobile interface, Palm gives you the most basic version of the OS in the Palm Treo Pro, with only a few scant improvements hiding beneath the surface, and not where you’d really care to look for them (the Communication Manager, for instance).” Link.

PC World reviews the Palm Treo Pro and writes, “The Treo Pro has plenty of pluses: Svelte good looks, bundled GPS software, a standard earphone jack, and easy Windows Mobile app shutdown. But the Treo Pro’s heat issue worries me–and its high unlocked price tag could turn off anyone whose corporate IT department isn’t buying.” Link.

MobileTechReview reviews the Palm Treo Pro and writes, “We’re thrilled to see a Treo with a very current and competitive feature set. No more longing for WiFi or a GPS– they’re here!..In the end, the Palm has a good set of features, and they all work as advertised: WiFi, GPS, 3G and telephony. The trouble is the field is wide and there’s not much that makes the Treo Pro stand out against competitors like the BlackBerry Bold, BlackBerry Curve, HP iPAQ 910c and Nokia E71.” Link.

CNET UK reviews the Palm Treo Pro and writes, “This is without a doubt Palm’s most complete phone to date and it handles itself well. While it doesn’t feature a fancy 3D interface, the combination of hardware keys and touchscreen produces an enjoyable Windows Mobile experience. It doesn’t have the finesse of the BlackBerry Bold or the allure of the iPhone 3G but it is a serious phone that provides the kind of support you’d need in the business world.” Link.
