Nokia N78 Reviews
CNET Australia reviews the Nokia N78 and writes, “In our opinion, the N78 is going to make it very difficult for Nokia to sell the more expensive N96 handsets. On paper, the N78 is identical to the N96 without the massive internal storage and without DVB-H TV, which is currently a useless feature for the Australian market. Add the potentially handy FM radio transmitter and the N78 could be the pick of the litter.” Link.
MobileTechReview has a review of the Nokia N78 and writes, “You know the drill, Nokia comes out with a lovely new NSeries smartphone, and we wait about 6 months to see a North American version with US 3G, if we see it at all. What a pleasant surprise that the Nokia N78-3 US edition popped out near the launch of the Eurasian version; no long wait involved. Nokia tells us it will officially go on sale by the end of June for around $550…With the proliferation of high spec Nokia NSeries and E series devices, it’s becoming harder to choose among them. Here in the US, at least for AT&T subscribers, the list is shorter if you want 3G support and that narrows the choice. If you aren’t a photo maven and don’t crave the Nokia N95’s 5 megapixel camera or the N95 8 gig’s massive storage, the N78 is a logical alternative. Though longer, it is thinner and we expect when the phone has been out a few months, prices will settle and the N78 will be a cost-saving alternative. The phone certainly offers a lot for the money: GPS, WiFi, 3G a 3 megapixel autofocus camera and the latest S60 software. We love the looks and clever modern design– heck we don’t even mind the keys!” Link.
InfoSync reviews the Nokia N78 and writes, “The Nokia N78 is available as an unlocked phone from Nokia and associated retailers. It works on AT&T’s 3G HSDPA networks, though some features, like videoconferencing with the front-facing camera, won’t work on U.S. networks. The phone is available unlocked for about $500. It doesn’t require a contract agreement, but it also doesn’t benefit from a carrier subsidy…The Nokia N78 is one of the best N-series devices we’ve tested to date, and it’s a great phone all around. For music and Web browsing, it’s snappy and easy to use, with powerful features that won’t let you down. The camera and messaging apps (or lack thereof) are disappointing, but not a deal breaker if you’re more of a media fan. The hardest part will be convincing buyers this phone is worth $500, but we have no problem recommending it to folks who hate contract agreements or love a good phone at any price. Nokia, take note: This phone with a SureType keyboard and some down-home, Americanized applications would be a killer device. Release: June 2008. Price: $500.” Link.
All About Symbian reviews the Nokia N78 and writes, “The N78 is the new entry level product for the Nseries range, but this should be set in the context that all Nseries phone should really be considered high-end - it is just a matter of degrees. The device can be seen as a direct replacement for the Nokia N73, far more so than was the case with the N82, which was really all about the camera. I think there’s every chance that the N78 will match the pattern of the N73 - becoming one of the best selling Nseries, carried by numerous operators and breaking out of the traditional smartphone user base. It is also the product that, to date, goes furthest in carrying the message of Nokia as a service and Internet player, as envisioned in the Ovi strategy, to the wider market. The N78 has an impressive feature set: the hardware - 3.2 megapixel auto-focus camera, WiFi and 3.5G connectivity, integrated GPS - tells one part of the story, but it is the versatility of the software suite that pushes location, imaging and multimedia services to the fore that makes it really stand out. At the same time it has a modest price point compared to its Nseries sisters. Its launching price point, around £300, is 50% that of the N96, 60% of the N95 and 80% of the N82.” Link.
CNET reviews the Nokia N78 and writes, “First introduced at GSMA 2008, the Nokia N78 is finally making its way to the States. Like the other N series models, the N78 has a heavy focus on multimedia, boasting a 3.2-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, the ability to record video at VGA quality, an MP3 player, and an FM transmitter that allows you to stream tunes to an FM radio. The N78 is also outfitted with GPS, and what’s really cool is that the smartphone’s GPS and imaging capabilities work together so you can geotag your photos. It’s also well connected, as the quad-band phone offers Bluetooth 2.0, Wi-Fi (802.11b/g), and HSDPA support. Clearly, it’s well-stocked in the features department, but how does it perform? Overall, we’d say fairly good. The GPS and geotagging capabilities were definitely the highlight; the tracking abilities were impressive and being able to geotag your photos was a feature we came to love. That said, we were disappointed that the picture quality wasn’t the greatest and call quality could have been better. Still, we imagine many gadget hounds will clamor to get their hands on this high-end multimedia phone. The Nokia N78 is expected to be available online and at Nokia flagship stores starting next week for around $550 unlocked. Also, be sure to get the Nokia N78-3 model as this version supports U.S. 3G bands.” Link.
CrunchGear reviews the Nokia N78 and writes, “Overall the N78 is more of the same. It’s a beautiful phone and folks who enjoy T9 typing and Symbian’s very specific learning curve will probably enjoy this phone. One little perk I especially liked was the Internet radio implementation. It worked flawlessly and in minutes I was able to stream live radio from the Uzbek provinces without trouble. It also has an even cooler FM transmitter function for transmitting the audio straight to a standard radio. My problems were only with the keys and the call quality and not the rest of the phone features…I prefer Nokia’s N95 because it has more heft and more active buttons. The slide-out keypad and media functions hide things I’d like to see hidden and reveal them at opportune times. The N78 is a high-concept phone with its heart on its sleeve. Like an emo band, the dark lines and backlights add a sense of style to the traditionally staid N-Series but the $450 price tag should give Nokia fans a pause. The N78 can be aggravating but like all Nokia products it’s still better than 98% of phones out there today.” Link.
CNET UK reviews the Nokia N78 and writes, “The N78 is a mixed bag. It packs more features than most phones, but the camera is underwhelming and the navigation key is fiddly to use. It’s by no means a terrible phone, but it’s not a great one either…Compared to the similarly-specced N82, we don’t think it holds up very well. Sure, it’s thinner and it’ll help you find your way around as you browse the Web and listen to music, but the overall user experience isn’t what we expected. With a few crucial tweaks, it could have been a much better phone.” Link.
PC Mag reviews the Nokia N78 and writes, “Nokia’s recent unlocked handsets are all solid choices; typically the form factor you choose will come down to personal preference. Aside from the aforementioned Nokia N82 and N95 alternatives, check out the unlocked HTC Touch Dual, a slider that offers true document editing, or the MWg Atom Life, which lacks hardware keyboards, but packs plenty of power. If you’re looking for a (locked) CDMA handset in a similar vein, the aforementioned RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8130 (for Sprint or Verizon) is probably the N78’s closest competitor. Overall, this is a decent option. But at this price ($520), you should also look carefully at the $500 N82, which features a far better camera, and the $699 N95 8GB, which is a superior video and game player.” Link.
Pocket-lint reviews the Nokia N78 and writes, “The Nokia N78 is a candy bar handset that packs in plenty of features. The design itself is simple, glossy and very black. The real estate on the front of the handset is split almost 50/50 between the screen and the keyboard, although the keyboard doesn’t feature regular keys…The Nokia N78 is yet another phone from Nokia that Nokia fans will be happy with. While there is nothing earth-shatteringly bad about the N78, for us a clumsy interface detracts from the abundance, and we mean abundnace, of features this handset offers. Average.” Link.
MobileBurn reviews the Nokia N78 and writes, “The N78 represents what most of the world will see from Nokia as newer models are released. GPS plays a major part here, and Feature Pack 2 is primed with untapped ability that its over-the-air (OTA) updatability may unlock. The N78 is a really solid device. Those who take the plunge with the N78 will not likely be disappointed. I give it a “Recommended” rating. Link.
