HTC Diamond Reviews
CNET Australia has a first take review the HTC Touch Diamond and writes, “It’s simple arithmetic: you take the interface of the iPhone and you mash-it-up with the hardware of the Xperia X1 and you get a product capable of superseding them both. Anyone waiting for either an iPhone or the X1, and who isn’t madly fanatical about either, should add the Diamond to their to-compare list…From the information we have so far there is a lot to like about the Touch Diamond, as well as a few notable shortcomings. We look forward to seeing the Diamond in our Labs closer to its release at the end of Q2 or early Q3.” Link.
Pocket-lint has a first look review of the HTC Touch Diamond and writes, “Although we weren’t able to test every facet of the HTC Diamond (GPS, camera quality) what we saw was very impressive…HTC has somehow managed to take a Microsoft device and make it everything but - a good thing in our mind…This is a consumer smartphone that packs more specs, and if HTC can sort out the lag issue, more punch than the iPhone in all areas. The only thing it appears to be lagging is the audio and video prowess of Apple’s smartphone…If you aren’t fussed about multimedia and just want to stay connected on the go, this is certainly one to watch.” Link.
MobileBurn reviews the HTC Touch Diamond and writes, “…this much I can say: the Touch Diamond is the coolest Windows Mobile Professional device I have used, bar none. I am very much looking forward to a North American version of the Diamond and its brother, the Touch Pro (AKA Raphael), with its large QWERTY keyboard. HTC is really on to something here, to be sure, and regardless of the problems that I experienced, I expect these TouchFLO 3D devices to sell by the millions. But should you run out and buy one of these bad boys? Well, if you live in Asia or Europe, maybe. At least if you like bleeding edge devices. If you are a bit less adventurous, I would say wait a while to see how other people feel about the Diamond. If I lived in the right part of the world, I’d be using this phone, I can say that much. But just like the iPhone that it has its sights on, it isn’t for everybody.” Link.
ZDNet reviews the HTC Touch Diamond and writes, “The HTC Touch Diamond is not perfect and there are a few issues that need to be updated soon to provide for a solid experience, yet I think these can be addressed with a firmware update. I will be buying one of these as soon as the U.S. model that works with AT&T or T-Mobile’s 3G network is released. I also recommend you check out other reviews and if you are in the U.S. I recommend you wait to see the HTC Touch Diamond coming from your local carrier later this year since you will then get 3G data functionality. I particularly enjoyed the reviews and thoughts from Phone Arena, Michael Gartenberg, CoolSmartphone (Great 7 days of videos, including a 37 minutes video.), and Geek.com.” Link.
CNET reviews the HTC Touch Diamond and writes, “We don’t envy the HTC Touch Diamond. There’s a lot of pressure on this little smartphone; HTC executive Cheng Hui-ming has called it “the most important product for HTC this year,” and of course, the Touch Diamond has been compared to the Apple iPhone. Now, we’re still a few months out from seeing the U.S. version of the Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphone, but we couldn’t wait. Thanks to Dynamism, we were able to get our hands on an unlocked version of the Europe/Asia HTC Touch Diamond to try out. Now, to be clear up front, since this isn’t optimized for use here in the States, we’re not going to knock it for the lack of U.S. 3G support or the fact that’s it tri-band. However, we will ding it for its sluggish performance and subpar call quality. It was really quite disappointing, especially since we think it’s an incredibly sexy device and the new 3D interface is so cool. As is, we wouldn’t really recommend shelling out the $700 for an unlocked version, but hopefully, some of these issues will be resolved once the HTC Touch Diamond is released in the United States.” Link.
PC Pro reviews the HTC Touch Diamond and writes, “Back when we reviewed the HTC Touch, we had one key message to say to HTC: drop Windows Mobile so far back into the background that people hardly need to use it. And it has…But it’s simultaneously crippled the Touch Diamond by either using code that isn’t good enough, thus making the whole phone sluggish, or it hasn’t chosen a fast enough processor. We suspect the former as the 528MHz Qualcomm unit powering the Diamond doesn’t look like its struggling for horsepower…And who knows, maybe in a few months’ time its engineers will have done some clever tweaking and updating to make the interface work as it should. At which point, this could turn into a half-decent phone…Until then, though, the Bad outweighs the Good by such a margin that if people told us they were thinking of buying the Touch Diamond we’d be forced to rip the credit card out of their hands for their own protection.” Link.
Trusted Reviews has a review of the HTC Touch Diamond and writes, “The Touch Diamond packs in a lot of features and is a good effort by HTC to rival the iPhone’s touchscreen usability while retaining the power and extensibility of Windows Mobile. But despite the hype, the Diamond is distinctly half-baked…Granted, the Touchflo 3D works better than ever to turn Windows Mobile into a genuine phone interface. It hides the ugly-duckling Windows interface away successfully, and browsing the web on HTC’s version of Opera Mobile is fantastic. But as a complete package, the Touch Diamond just doesn’t convince. Not only does the build not reach the standard set by the iPhone or even the previous generation of HTC Touch phones (this is especially disappointing given the £400+ price tag), but the performance is laboured and the software not entirely stable.” Link.
Pocket-lint reviews the HTC Touch Diamond and writes, “HTC has created a device that is a the best iPhone challenger we’ve seen to date and offers those not keen to switch to Apple or O2 the chance to get touchy feely with their phone. Compared to the Samsung i900 this is light years ahead, compared to the BlackBerry Curve, users will miss the QWERTY keyboard and while the touchscreen keyboard does go someway to replacing this it’s just not the same experience. However BlackBerry Pearl users should be fine…Against the iPhone the tech specs are better but that stylus inclusion is admittance that the icons on the screen are just a little bit fiddly from time to time…Overall though, HTC has somehow managed to take the Microsoft OS and make it everything but - a good thing in our mind….It’s a thumbs up from us.” Link.
LetsGoMobile reviews the HTC Touch Diamond and writes, “Design and user’s ease are key words to describe the HTC Diamond. The package, as well as the phone itself carries ‘HTC Innovation’ written on them. The HTC Diamond has 4GB of internal memory at its disposal which cannot be enhanced. This is quite reasonable looking at the current comparable devices, although 8GB would have been a real plus…Internet through HSDPA or WiFi, combined with the Internet Explorer Web browser is perfect on this mobile phone; it’s fast and easy. The preinstalled Mobile version of Microsoft Office enhances the user’s possibilities in a positive way. Also because editing Office documents is enabled, thus optimising the business availability.” Link.
Mobile Choice reviews the HTC Touch Diamond and writes, “Overall we can’t help but feel let down by the HTC Touch Diamond. It looks wonderful and the touch-screen interface simply sparkles, but sadly the usability just isn’t there, with the touch-screen proving more a hindrance than a blessing. In addition after using the phone for half an hour or so, the back of the handset started to get very hot…Perhaps HTC was keen to get its touch-screen offering into the shops before the arrival of the new and improved iPhone. However, in hindsight perhaps it should have taken a little more time and ironed out a few fatal flaws.” Link.
IT Reviews does a review of the HTC Touch Diamond and writes, “There are some great things about this device. It is certainly small, for example. At 102mm tall, 51mm wide and 11.35mm thick it fits easily in the pocket…On paper the Touch Diamond is a desirable device. Some of this desirability remains in the real world, but the poor battery life is the biggest of several irritations.” Link.
All things Digital reviews the HTC Touch Diamond and writes, “The Diamond incorporates HTC software, as well as software from Sprint, MobiTV, TeleNav and others. But it isn’t a stretch to imagine HTC trying to create a fully end-to-end model (hardware and all software) in the future…It is exciting to think about other mobile-phone companies giving better software a real try, especially those that attempt to improve Windows Mobile. But HTC’s Touch Diamond doesn’t hide the outdated operating system well enough or often enough for a user to want to buy a whole new mobile device.” Link.
Trusted Reviews reviews the HTC Touch Diamond and writes, “It hides the ugly-duckling Windows interface away successfully, and browsing the web on HTC’s version of Opera Mobile is fantastic. But as a complete package, the Touch Diamond just doesn’t convince. InfoSync reviews the HTC Touch Diamond and writes, “While almost every other area on the HTC Touch Diamond gets a visual polish, the calendar and productivity apps are largely left behind. Sure, you can read your next appointments on the home screen, but when you dig into the calendar you get the standard, boxy and bare Windows Mobile look. We wish there was something better here, as the Touch Diamond seems to have some other nice improvements that will appeal to the business audience.” Link.
PC World reviews the HTC Touch Diamond and writes, “It may not fully quench your iPhone lust, but the HTC Touch Diamond is certainly worth a look. Though I ran into a few annoyances (such as occasional sluggish performance), my experience overall with the Touch Diamond was positive.” Link.
PC World reviews the HTC Touch Diamond and writes, “The Diamond is certainly the wave of the future, with its innovative and pleasurable user interface with the power of Windows Mobile underneath. HTC’s software is well-designed, with finger-friendly targets, an enlarged Start Menu option and controllable finger-scrolling in places like contacts and the weather country/city picker. Opera 9.5 might not beat Safari on the iPhone, but that has more to do with hardware differences between the two phones: the iPhone’s much larger screen makes it easier to read text in overview landscape mode.” Link.
PC Mag reviews the HTC Touch Diamond (Sprint) and writes, “The Touch Diamond is easily the sexiest phone on the market running Windows Mobile. It’s also plenty powerful and, aside from the battery life issue (which, admittedly, is a big one), the handset generally performs well, particularly as a mobile Web browser. In short, it’s an ambitious touch-screen handset that never quite manages to overcome its clumsy operating system.” Link.
