BlackBerry Bold 9000
CNET UK reviews the BlackBerry Bold 900 and writes, “For some time we were worried that RIM didn’t understand the increasingly powerful consumer market. Businessmen were no longer content with boring business phones and the likes of Nokia were quickly moving in on its turf. But the Bold is a clear statement from RIM that it’s listening to the market…If you’re a BlackBerry user, we seriously advise you to check out the Bold and even if you’re only considering investing in a super-phone, we recommend you have a look too. This is RIM’s pièce de resistance and will most definitely delight BlackBerry fans who refuse to get an iPhone.” Link.
Apcmag reviews the BlackBerry Bold 9000 and writes, “There’s no way the 312MHz processor of the Curve or 8800 could adequately meet the Bold’s demands when it comes to the screen, 3G HSDPA speeds and multimedia. So RIM swapped this out for a 624MHz XScale processor (it’s not officially an Intel XSale chip, as you may read elsewhere, as Intel sold off its ARM-based Xscale business to Marvell in 2006 in order to pursue its x86-based Atom architecture)…And it’s a good job they did, because this processor lets the Bold take flight. There’s no lag worthy of mention when moving through screens or in and out of applications. Video plays smooth and skip-free, and the task of opening media files from a microSD memory card is quite snappy.” Link.
Telegraph reviews the BlackBerry Bold 9000 and writes, “The BlackBerry Bold, quite simply, does more than the iPhone. It looks better than any of its predecessors, too, but email and professional uses are always going to be the priorities for this device. If they’re your priority as well, then it’s a superb machine - carrying it says you mean business.” Link.
PC Pro reviews the BlackBerry Bold 9000 and writes, “It’s ‘Bold’, boasts ‘industrial design’, has ‘frets’ between the rows of its keys on the front. It seems that RIM has gone all Apple on us with the launch of its latest flagship smartphone. The Bold (also known as the 9000) follows major launches from Nokia, Apple and HTC in recent weeks, and it seems to have them all clearly in its sights…In fact, just as we were with the E71, we’re big fans of RIM’s latest do-it-all emailer. It’s a powerful phone, one that’s very pleasant to use, and its new look interface, improved keyboard and screen and highly impressive battery life earn it a well-merited Recommended award. Only its slightly porky profile and less-than-zippy responsiveness prevent it overtaking the E71 as our A List choice.” Link.
PC Mag reviews the BlackBerry Bold 9000 and writes, “BlackBerry Curve owners will want to upgrade as soon as they see the Bold’s luscious screen. Once you get out of the reality distortion field, the Bold’s real competitors are the unlocked Nokia E71 and the HP iPAQ 910, which are both excellent enterprise-friendly handhelds with a similar physical style. The E71 is as pretty as the Bold, and like the iPhone it has a better Web browser. But Nokia just hasn’t been able to make push e-mail work as flawlessly as RIM has. The iPAQ will please businesses that want to connect directly to an Exchange server without the BlackBerry middleware. But Windows Mobile is traditionally less stable and slower to respond than the BlackBerry OS. The Bold also has more processor power and a higher-res screen–and thus possibly more potential for the future–than either of its competitors. Still, all three devices are all excellent options for a high-end, keyboarded smartphone.” Link.
Dialaphone reviews the BlackBerry Bold 9000 and writes, “For someone who is new to the Blackberry, the Blackberry Bold 9000 is a full-featured smartphone that is easy to use. For someone who is already familiar with the Blackberry, this phone takes the old features a step further and adds more personal use and mobile web functionality to the phone. This means that the Blackberry Bold 9000 truly stands out as a smartphone that could be as useful to the average consumer as to the professional business person with a love for high-tech gadgets.” Link.
CTV reviews the BlackBerry Bold 9000 and writes, “The Bold is one of RIM’s finest BlackBerries and very much a culmination of the best features they have developed and lessons they have learned over the past decade. It is an expensive handset, a premium version of their BlackBerry concept and so hardly the model to use as the basis for a company’s mobile fleet, but rather a small luxury for those in the market for a personal reward. Much was made at the Bold’s launch about it being a hybrid device, a handset that can be marketed to both consumers and enterprise workers, which is true in the case of its media features, but more so in its style and design which has an elegance that allows it to be cool and serious at the same time. It’s one of the best handsets on the market today and I look forward to RIM’s more experimental BlackBerry models coming in the near future.” Link.
Mobile Choice reviews the BlackBerry Bold 9000 and writes, “The truth is that it comes down to size. If you’re happy with a larger phone to enjoy a fabulous smartphone experience, the Bold will almost certainly tick all the boxes. If you’re not, you may want to look elsewhere…Yes, the device is big and this may put off consumers that insist on a phone that they can trouser without affecting their stride pattern. However, if you are happy to carry your smartphone in a bag, this is a device you won’t be embarrassed to whip out on a regular basis.” Link.
Pocket-lint reviews the BlackBerry Bold 9000 and writes, “Where the BlackBerry wins out over the Apple iPhone is that you can very quickly search email to find what you are after, you can cut, copy and paste, view HTML messages in plain text, restrict your download sizes, your roaming actions and plenty more…New features we’ve found include an improved focus on search allowing you to search instantly by Sender or Subject, something that is surprisingly helpful, as well as having greater control over how the messages are displayed.” Link.
Digital Trends reviews the BlackBerry Bold and writes, “In the end, various minor shortcomings aside, the Blackberry Bold is by far the sweetest smartphone RIM has created. If you’re hooked on so-called “crackberries” or just want to upgrade to a mobile phone that offers the best of best worlds (think boardroom meets bad ass), hey… Congratulations – you’ve finally met your match.” Link.
MobileBurn reviews the BlackBerry Bold 9000 and writes, “If you are looking for the ultimate in mobile email, the BlackBerry Bold 9000 from RIM is a device you should look long and hard at. It excels at most everything and looks fine while doing it. We give it a “Highly Recommended” rating with no reservations.” Link.
CNET reviews the BlackBerry Bold (AT&T) and writes, “The BlackBerry Bold delivers on a number of fronts. Its half-VGA display is one of the sharpest screens we’ve seen on a smartphone, which, combined with the stereo speakers, really boosts the multimedia experience. The Bold also ships with the latest BlackBerry operating system, new productivity applications, and support for HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth. This is on top of all the great messaging capabilities. Of course, it’s not perfect. The smartphone isn’t the sleekest device on the block, and the Web browser could use more work.” Link.
MobileBurn reviews the BlackBerry Bold 9000 and writes, “The BlackBerry Bold delivers high-speed browsing and powerful messaging capabilities, and it represents a major step up in form and function over existing BlackBerry models. But faults such as mediocre call quality and an unimpressive camera impede its potential to compete with the iPhone and the Android-based T-Mobile G1. In addition, its high price (compared to $199 and $180, respectively) will make competing for consumers’ attention even harder for the Bold.” Link.
MobileTechReview reviews the BlackBerry Bold 9000 and writes, “…if you’re a BlackBerry addict looking for the top of the line, this and the BlackBerry Storm are it. Though for traditionalists, the Storm isn’t necessarily attractive since it loses the usual strong BlackBerry hardware keyboard and adds a touch screen. Oddly given the likely greater expense of building the Storm, it looks like a relative bargain at $199 with a 2 year contract, and we hope that AT&T revises the Bold’s price down sooner rather than later to compete.” Link.
PC Authority reviews the BlackBerry Bold 9000 and writes, “It’s a powerful phone, one that’s very pleasant to use, and its new-look interface, improved keyboard and screen – plus its highly impressive battery life – earn it a well-merited Recommended award. Only its slightly porky profile and less-than-zippy responsiveness stop it from supplanting the E71 as our A List choice.” Link.
