T-Mobile Wing Press Release

T-Mobile USA, Inc., today announced the availability of the new T-Mobile Wing™, a phone designed to help customers master their busy personal and professional lives. Developed by High Tech Computer Corp. (HTC), the world’s leading provider of Microsoft Windows Mobile-based devices, the T-Mobile Wing has a blue soft-touch exterior, touch screen, and full, slide-out QWERTY keyboard — a great fit for customers seeking a powerful all-in-one device with an eye-catching design and enhanced ease of use.

“In today’s hectic and fast-paced world, staying connected to those who matter most is not easy,” said Leslie Grandy, vice president, Product Development, T-Mobile USA. “With the T-Mobile Wing, customers have the freedom to choose how to communicate, whether it’s calling their loved ones, e-mailing with friends, or sharing presentations with a client from one of more than 8,000 T-Mobile HotSpot locations.”

Designed by HTC and available exclusively from T-Mobile, the T-Mobile Wing brings many enhancements in form and functionality including a new keyboard design, longer battery life, a 2.0 megapixel camera, a great phone experience with speakerphone, and Bluetooth connectivity for reliable hands-free use. The powerful messaging options and full QWERTY “slider” keyboard provide quick and convenient access to personal and professional e-mail, and all four major instant messaging providers — AOL®, Yahoo!®, Windows Live Messenger and ICQ(a) — while the vibrant, high-quality screen provides a rich experience for Web browsing or watching video clips(a) in landscape format.

“The HTC-designed T-Mobile Wing is a versatile, user-friendly smartphone that will appeal to a wide range of consumers,” said Todd Achilles, vice president of HTC America. “The T-Mobile Wing is 30 percent smaller than its predecessor, the T-Mobile MDA, and is packed with broad functionality that enables users to experience the best in connectivity, productivity and mobility.”

T-Mobile Wing Features New Advances in Software Including Windows Mobile 6

The T-Mobile Wing is the first new device brought to market in the U.S. to be powered by Microsoft Windows Mobile 6, offering faster access to contacts, the ability to view and edit Microsoft Office documents, and even richer Web experiences. Windows Mobile 6 supports HTML e-mail so that people can view and compose e-mail messages in their original HTML format with live links to Web sites, support for images, tables and bullets. Text and images are displayed as they would be on a PC, whether from their Microsoft Office Outlook and Exchange Server account, from a Web-based account such as Windows Live Hotmail or from a myriad of other popular service providers.

T-Mobile Wing customers will also enjoy integrated Windows Live services, including Windows Live Messenger, to chat with more than one person at a time and to express themselves through emoticons; Windows Live Hotmail that is up-to-date and delivered directly to the device; all contacts in a unified, presence-enabled list; Live Search to quickly and efficiently search the Web for news, local businesses and entertainment, directions, maps, images, and more; and Windows Live Spaces to access links to friends’ spaces within contact cards and send photos directly to their space from the Wing.

“The T-Mobile Wing with Windows Mobile 6 helps people stay connected with friends, family and colleagues, whether they’re in the office or on the go,” said John O’Rourke, general manager, Mobile Communications Business, Microsoft Corp. “The T-Mobile Wing’s work and play features help people take their PC experience on the road with them, making sure they’re always in touch.”

The included Outlook Mobile software offers up-to-date e-mail, calendar and contact information. Customers using the T-Mobile Wing at work with Microsoft Exchange Server can get instant e-mail and enhanced security features that let them clear data from a device if it is stolen or require high-security passwords to access information.

The T-Mobile Wing is a myFavesSM-enabled phone, taking advantage of the personal wireless communications experience available only through T-Mobile. Customers are empowered with a fun and easy-to-use phone interface which, when coupled with a myFaves rate plan, facilitates unlimited nationwide calling to any five U.S. phone numbers, even landlines (excluding toll-free and 900 numbers).

Key features of the T-Mobile Wing include these:

* Compact, powerful smartphone with large external touch screen and stylus
* Slide-out screen exposing full QWERTY keypad
* Soft-touch exterior with deep blue color
* Wi-Fi and EDGE-enabled high-speed Internet access
* Full HTML Web browsing
* Support for Microsoft Office Mobile enables document viewing and editing
* Windows Live for Windows Mobile including Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live Hotmail, Live Search, and Windows Live Spaces
* Direct Push e-mail available with Exchange Server 2003 SP2 and later; Windows Live Hotmail also supports push mail
* T-Mobile’s myFaves
* Voice dialing, voice commands and voice recorder
* Bluetooth connectivity
* 2.0 megapixel camera with 8x digital zoom
* Video capture and playback music and video player
* Micro SD memory card slot
* 2.8-inch diagonal, 65,000 color screen with 240×320 pixels
* 2.3 x 4.3 x 0.7 inches; 6.0 ounces

T-Mobile Wing Reviews

MobilitySite has a review of the T-Mobile Wing and writes, “The T-Mobile Wing is a solid replacement for the any HTC Wizard Variant. (T-Mobile MDA/Cingular 8125) When compared to the Wizard, the performance is not a huge increase, but having Windows Mobile 6 and it’s additions make it a worth the upgrade. If you are still carrying the MDA, the keyboard is probaly so loose that it slides open whenever it wants anyway and the spring loaded keyboard on the Wing should be a welcome fix for you. This phone is pretty slim for a slider, it’s really amazing. The styling of this phone make it a looker for those that care what your phone looks like. I definately recommend this phone to anyone on the T-Mobile network. I am not sure it’s worth swaping carriers, but I would have to consider.” Link.

PCMag has a review of the T-Mobile Wing and writes, “Essentially, it’s a matter of personal preference whether you like this design, or if you would rather have a slab-style QWERTY smartphone such as T-Mobile’s own Dash or the BlackBerry 8800. With the Wing, you get a roomier keyboard, not to mention the touch screen, stylus, and Windows Mobile 6 Professional. And it’s finally a viable voice phone. But the Wing’s slow CPU is one carryover from the MDA that shouldn’t have made the transition. The reduced battery life is perplexing, but not a deal-breaker. … the T-Mobile Wing’s numerous upgrades from the MDA make it a solid, if not ultimately compelling, touch-screen alternative.” Link.

PCWorld has a review of the T-Mobile Wing and writes, “For $300, the T-Mobile Wing is a reasonable value, given the phone’s versatile functionality, stellar call quality, and excellent battery life. My greatest concerns about the phone involve its limited on-board storage and its poorly constructed buttons; longer term, Ia??d worry about the integrity of that slider mechanism. But those concerns aside, the Wing makes a great package, especially if you value the easy input that a touch screen affords, together with the computing flexibility of Windows Mobile.” Link.

Pocketnow has a review of the T-Mobile Wing and writes, ” If you’re drawn to T-Mobile’s new “MyFaves” rate plans, the Wing supports this fully and beautifully. I wish it would still support the Email Triggers feature for selective push email (i.e. only people you like get emails pushed), but all good things must come to an end. The new Windows Live features such as push Hotmail, Instant messenger with voice clips, and Live Search are sure to be enticing for consumers. At first I was a bit turned off by the blue coloring, but it has since grown on me. Everyone has black or grey phones, the dark blue is quite a refreshing change. And I can’t get enough of the “soft touch” skin covering the device. That combined with the excellent build quality is sure to make the Wing very popular with T-Mobile’s Windows Mobile fans.” Link.

MobileTechReview has a review of the T-Mobile Wing and writes, “Though not an earth-shattering upgradge to the T-Mobile MDA, the Wing is competive with other US carrier’s recent HTC slider phone offerings other than the lack of 3G (not the phone’s fault, but rather T-Mobile’s US network). If your MDA is gettng old and creaky, the Wing will make a nice replacement with its appreciably slimmer design, grippy coating, more capable Bluetooth, updated OS and an improved camera. Battery life is super by Windows Mobile Professional standards, but the slower CPU speed vs. competitors from other carriers isn’t a plus.” Link.

LaptopMag has a review of the T-Mobile Wing and writes, “If you’re sold on Window Mobile 6 and T-Mobile, the Wing is a solid choice. Power users who can afford the $100 premium over the Dash will appreciate its larger screen and roomier keyboard, and that it runs the full version of Office Mobile. Those who need fast data speeds everywhere they go, however, should hold out for HTC’s upcoming WM6 phone with EV-DO Rev. A capability.” Link.

ComputerWorld has a review of the T-Mobile Wing and writes, “For $300, the T-Mobile Wing is a reasonable value, given the phone’s versatile functionality, stellar call quality and excellent battery life. My greatest concerns about the phone involve its limited onboard storage and its poorly constructed buttons. In the longer term, I’d worry about the integrity of that slider mechanism. But those concerns aside, the Wing makes a great package, especially if you value the easy input that a touch screen affords, together with the computing flexibility of Windows Mobile.” Link.

CNET has a review of the T-Mobile Wing and writes, “General performance was a bit sluggish. Armed with a 201MHz TI OMAP850 processor, 128MB of ROM, and 64MB of DDR SDRAM, the Wing couldn’t quite keep up with our multiple demands and there was a noticeable lag when we had numerous apps open. Fortunately, it’s now easier to close out of applications using the Task Manager utility, which you can keep at the top of your Today screen for easy access. The Wing definitely falls behind the competition in the Web-browsing experience. Where the Cingular 8525 has the benefit of Cingular’s HSDPA network, the Wing only pokes along at EDGE speeds; pages took longer to load, and we grew impatient. Granted, EDGE isn’t that slow, but you definitely notice a difference after having used a 3G handset, and for a device such as the Wing, that extra boost would make a powerful smart phone even more powerful.” Link.

Brighthand reviews the T-Mobile Wing and says this, “The design of the T-Mobile Wing makes it a better wireless handheld than a phone. Don’t get me wrong, it can certainly be used as a phone, but it’s clear this isn’t intended to be the primary function of this model…I don’t consider this a drawback. The inclusion of a relatively big keyboard and screen makes this smartphone ideal for people who frequently exchange lots of emails or text messages, but at the same time this pushes the device’s bulk — and price — up considerably…What it comes down to is if you’re not expecting to do a lot of text entry with your phone, then take a look at some of T-Mobile’s other options.” Link.

Digital Trends has a review of the T-Mobile Wing and here’s what they think, “The T-Mobile Wing is a good balance between Sidekick’s user friendliness and a Blackberry’s raw power. It’s main selling point – Windows Media 6.0 – is now available on other smartphones such as the Moto Q, but loyal T-Mobile customers will appreciate the familiar keyboard layout and the MyFaves compatibility. Just don’t expect it to be as small – or as fast – as its younger Sidekick cousin.” Link.
