T-Mobile Sidekick Slide reviews

InfoSync reviews the T-Mobile Sidekick Slide and writes, “The Sidekick will be an interesting phone to watch when T-Mobile goes 3G, but perhaps the carrier should leave the Slide behind on that journey. In sacrificing a half-inch length, T-Mobile has only shrunk the keyboard and display, and has not made a phone that feels smaller than the larger Sidekick LX. The Slide should have been the Sidekick RAZR, a thin, tight-fitting phone with a solid feel and near-invisible seams. Except for novelty, we can’t see why T-Mobile chose the slider mechanism, especially on a phone named “Sidekick.” In other ways, too, the Sidekick Slide fails to deliver. Multimedia capabilities lag behind competitors, and even the interface is starting to feel dated. Mostly, though, compared to recent competitors, the Sidekick has lost its competitive edge as a trendsetting messaging phone.” Link.

PC Mag reviews the T-Mobile Sidekick Slide and writes, “Everything the Slide does, the Sidekick LX or the BlackBerry Curve do better, especially the Curve. Not only is the Curve much smaller and a better phone, it’s also able to make free calls over Wi-Fi, it can grab more types of e-mail (and it stores more messages), it’s a better music player, and it plays video, too. Plus there’s the inferior Slide keyboard. If you plan on typing with your messaging device, don’t go for the Slide.” Link.

Laptop Mag reviews the T-Mobile Sidekick Slide and writes, “T-Mobile brings new features, like push e-mail for AOL and Yahoo, to the Sidekick Slide, and it solidly maintains the Sidekick’s established reputation of being an easy-to-use text messaging tool. For that reason, older Sidekick owners and Sidekick fanatics will like the Slide. However, it doesn’t offer any noteworthy new features, such as a touchscreen or Wi-Fi support, or even an upgraded 2-MP camera. As such, the Slide feels more like a bulky first smart phone for kids than a phone for hip twentysomethings. For the same price (and assuming you’re not committed to T-Mobile), you can get the Motorola Moto Q 9h global, which offers 3G data, video playback, and a 2-MP camera and is every bit as hip as a Sidekick.” Link.

CNET reviews the T-Mobile Sidekick Slide and writes, “The T-Mobile Sidekick Slide is one of two new Sidekicks (the other being the T-Mobile Sidekick LX) to makes its debut just in time for the holiday season. Unlike previous models, including the Sidekick 3, the Slide is the first Sidekick to be manufactured by Motorola and features a more compact design and slide-up screen. For the most part, the handheld offers many of the same features as the Sidekick LX, including excellent messaging functions, integrated Bluetooth, a 1.3-megapixel camera, and support for MySpace Mobile. However, we found the Slide’s QWERTY keyboard harder to use, and the limited multimedia capabilities is disappointing. All that said, we think the T-Mobile Sidekick Slide is better suited for first-time buyers or newbies, especially with its cheaper $199.99 price tag (with a two-year contract), while diehard Sidekick fans might want to upgrade to the Sidekick LX.” Link.

CNET UK reviews the T-Mobile Sidekick Slide and writes, “There are plenty of great things about the Sidekick Slide, available for free on T-Mobile’s Flext 30 and Web’n'walk tariff. We love the push email and instant messaging features, as well as the automatic data back-up. However, the lack of 3G or Wi-Fi support and its rather bulky dimensions means it feels rather dated and is not quite as desirable as it could be.” Link.

Pocket-lint reviews the Sidekick Slide and writes, “The T-Mobile Sidekick Slide looks to be a good messaging phone for the “kids”. The robust redesign, QWERTY keyboard, large screen and instant messaging features will certainly appeal…However with only a 1.3 megapixel camera, quad-band connectivity and large design its going to struggle to compete against other offers out there from Apple, RIM, HTC, Sony Ericsson and more.” Link.

IT Reviews has a review of the T-Mobile Sidekick Slide and writes, “The Sidekick Slide is a funny old thing. Exclusive to T-Mobile in the UK, it looks like no other mobile phone we’ve seen - apart from other members of the Sidekick family. And while it does some really clever things like backing up all your stuff to the Web, it does some less clever things too, like running a proprietary operating system and create an unsightly bulge in your pocket.” Link.

PDA Street reviews the T-Mobile Sidekick Slide and writes, ” The T-Mobile Sidekick Slide, the first Sidekick created by Motorola, is our favorite since the original. Motorola hasn’t overhauled the brand, but breathed a little freshness into it, something sorely needed if this fashionable phone is going to keep from looking dated… The Sidekick LX may offer a little more, but we prefer the slender good looks of the Slide. This is the future of the Sidekick brand: slimmer models, same great performance.” Link.
