T-Mobile Ameo (HTC Athena) Reviews
CNET UK has a review of the T-Mobile Ameo and writes, “The Ameo keyboard is far too small and slow to allow real touch-typing, so it’s no real competition for genuine laptop computers. But at the same time, and even with its GPS functionality disabled, it’s faster and more powerful than almost every other smart phone out there — and with a screen that’s simply stunning.” Link.
Pocket-lint has a review of the T-Mobile HTC Ameo and gives it an 8 out of 10 rating: “It’s best to look at the Ameo as a mini laptop or PDA rather than a phone first as the size is going to restrict what you do. That said the Ameo has got lots going for it starting with that big screen - we dare say you could probably even do a presentation from it, it’s that good. It’s not completely perfect, it would have been nice to see the keyboard being Bluetooth and a stand put on the back of the screen for better positioning especially if you haven’t got a desk or level surface to hand. With the keyboard being so thin and the device so large HTC could have easily made the keyboard expandable. Finally the camera’s performance isn’t great.” Link.
ITReviews has a review of the T-Mobile Ameo and writes, “The keyboard is too small for touch-typing on, and in fact not a great deal faster to use than some of the better QWERTY keyboards on small Smartphones. You can’t hold the Ameo in two hands and use the keyboard with your thumbs, because it is top-heavy and there is always the danger of the two sections falling apart from each other. … We like the Ameo because it takes a different approach to Windows Mobile. But we aren’t sure it is a serious replacement for a mobile phone, and as a connected PDA it is clever but also rather large for the pocket or bag.” Link.
PCPro has a review of the T-Mobile Ameo and writes, “Communications are superb, with quad-band GSM, GPRS/EDGE, 3G, HSDPA, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Ultimately, though, the Ameo works well as a technology demonstrator or a lust-after style device, but as a day-to-day mobile comms tool it’s marred by compromises and poor usability.” Link.
Vnunet reviews the T-Mobile Ameo and writes, “It’s particularly cumbersome when you hold it to your ear to make a phone call. It includes both satellite navigation and wifi, but both are tricky to use…Still, the 5in screen is so big and bright that it’s hard not to like the Ameo. Apart from anything else, the data transfer speed means that it can at least be used for quickly surfing the internet, for instance.” Link.
