The 3D Multimedia Menu introduced in these devices is the first step to bringing a new user interface to the Nokia Nseries range. The new menu makes it easy to discover and enjoy your digital content and the Internet, and share your experiences with others.
“Accessing your portable music and games collection is not enough anymore,” said Jonas Geust, vice president, Multimedia, Nokia. “Today people want to be more in control of how and where they consume their digital entertainment. They want to discover new favorites and share them without being confined to one location - and it’s devices like the Nokia N81 that facilitate this.”
The Nokia N81 and Nokia N81 8GB also offer the discovery of millions of tracks through the Nokia Music Store*. And, with their integrated Nokia Music Players, creating playlists and managing music collections on the move is a breeze. For enhanced sound quality, compatible high-quality headphones or speakers can be used with the standard 3.5mm headphone connector.
A preview of the N-Gage games service is also available in the devices, including playable demos of EA SPORTS(TM) FIFA 07, Asphalt 3: Street Rules and Space Impact Light. After the launch of N-Gage later this year, the full N-Gage application will be available for download. Players can then try all N-Gage games for free and buy only the ones they want.
The estimated retail price of the Nokia N81 is 360 EUR before subsidies or taxes. The Nokia N81 8GB is expected to retail for 430 EUR before subsidies or taxes.

Nokia N81 8GB Reviews
MobileBurn reviews the Nokia N81 8GB and writes, “The Nokia N81 8GB is a worthy follow up to the N91, and it has rightfully been praised for its audio quality and internal storage. The battery life is ample for enjoying music, and it manages to do that without draining the battery, and the WiFi is a convenient touch for high-speed data. Once the Nokia Music Store and N-Gage Platform launch globally, the N81 will be a hot handset to have. The music experience on this phone is easily equal to that of the iPhone in terms of storage, audio quality, and convenience, especially given the numerous ways in which you can enjoy your tunes. However, the camera is merely decent for a 2.0 megapixel, and leaves something to be desired. The build quality is also less than perfect, with noisy creaks and groans being heard when using the handset. But even with those few shortcomings, I still consider the N81 8GB to be worthy of a ‘Recommended’ rating.” Link.
Gigaom reviews the Nokia N81 and writes, “In comparison to the Nokia N95, or even the older N71 and N73 phones, N81 is pokey, and a major disappointment. It is going to be packed up and shipped back, pronto. Nokia, which often delivers phones that I love, has flubbed this one.” Link.
CNET UK reviews the Nokia N81 and writes, “The N81 is an impressive phone, but it’s not really the revolutionary handset that many people were expecting. It has great music features and looks like it could become a seriously good games machine given the right software support, but it’s marred slightly by the poor touch wheel and chunky dimensions. It’s available from Carphone Warehouse for free on selected contracts or for around £280 pay as you go.” Link.
Pocket-lint reviews the Nokia N81 and writes, “Sony Ericsson’s implementation of software for us is better executed with its array of apps like SensMe, TrackID and ShakeIt, however where the Nokia N81 wins out is the addition of the Nokia Music Store…That said, the Nokia Music Store’s implementation against the iTunes Wi-Fi store from Apple on its iPhone just doesn’t compete…As a phone, the N81 does pack the 3G connectivity and better phone functionality, but if it’s purely the music you are after, the iPhone is still the one to go for.” Link.
3G reviews the Nokia N81 and writes, “There’s no point carping about the fact that the Nokia N81 8GB is bigger and bulkier than your Nokia 6300, Samsung U600 or Sony Ericsson W880i handsets. The Nseries phones are monstrously powerful and, therefore, you should expect to carry a little more phone in your pocket. So, it doesn’t lose any marks for size, but it does for the creaky plastic finish…Our other issue relates to the competition. With two Nseries phones launching at the same time, both offering 8GB of built-in memory, you can’t help but think that most will go for the one with the best spec - and that’s the Nokia N95 8GB…Whatever the N81 8GB can do - and it is very, very capable - it will always be in the shade of its more illustrious sibling.” Link.
Wirelessinfo reviews the Nokia N81 (8GB) and writes, “The Nokia N81 is a strange device in that it excels in some areas while completely dropping the ball in others. On the one hand it’s a great music device with 8GB of built-in storage and excellent music software. On the other hand it has one of the worst cameras we’ve seen on a mobile device. It’s a powerful smart phone and will support Nokia’s new gaming and music platforms, but we found many of the hardware controls to be prone to errors and the device itself somewhat cheaply made. It’s not a huge phone, but it does feel thick and heavy. Given that we can think of a negative for just about every positive, we can’t recommend the Nokia N81, especially not at it’s current price point. If it was half the price we might be able to say that music and gaming lovers should grab it and ignore it’s other flaws, but for $629 we expect a phone that’s excellent in all respects, not just a few.” Link.
Pocket Gamer reviews the Nokia N81 and writes, “Unlike N-Gage QD, the sad monster that most graphically embodies the failure of N-Gage’s first iteration, the N81 is a perfect transformer: it looks like a phone when it’s being a phone, and it functions well as a console when it’s being a console. In gaming terms, the only disappointment is the directional pad, not because it doesn’t work well but because if it had been slightly more game-friendly this phone would have earned Pocket Gamer’s maximum review score…Nevertheless, equipped as it is with the ability to run both Symbian and N-Gage games, as well as the humble Java games that most of us are confined to, the N81 is comfortably ahead of the crowd in terms of mobile gaming alone. The fact that it’s also one of the most powerful and feature-packed handsets available is simply the icing on the cake. Link.
IT Reviews has a review of the Nokia N81 (8GB) and writes, “The N81 8GB certainly has plenty of memory, and there are some other nice features. But this is a chunky phone which is disappointing in some areas. If you like the idea of all that storage, consider the N95 8GB as a better featured alternative.” Link.
CNET reviews the Nokia N81 (8GB) and writes, “…in theory, the Nokia N81 sounds great but in reality, it’s a complete disappointment. First, Nokia’s Internet services haven’t launched in the United States so you can’t take advantage of the N81’s full capabilities. Even so, we had so many problems with the mobile’s cramped navigation controls and buggy performance that we’re not sure it’d be worth it when the services are fully available. It’s a shame given that we’ve come to expect great performance from the N series (for instance, the Nokia N95), but for now, we’d have to say “pass” on the N81. The Nokia N81 is available now unlocked in two versions: an 8GB model ($629) and one with a microSD expansion slot that can accept cards as large as 4GB ($529).” Link.
Wired reviews the Nokia N81 (8GB) and writes, “3G and Wi-Fi, which should be standard on every phone, thank you very much. Gaming controls work as advertised, with nary a mis-pressed button in several straphanger gaming sessions. 8 gigs is, like, plenty of memory. Sleek design and excellent build quality. Unlocked. Autofocus-free 2-megapizzle camera is paparazzi-fast.” Link.
Brighthand reviews the Nokia N81 (8GB) and writes, “The N81 8GB is a mobile that sometimes let me down, and others times delightfully faded into the background. Just the design of the device screams of something needing a touchscreen and touch-sensitive controls, and I was let down where I could not do so. Even still, the buttons and controls were well placed and for the most part easy to figure out.” Link.
LetsGoMobile reviews the Nokia N81 (8GB) and writes, “We can say that we are dealing with a true multimedia device when we talk about the Nokia N81 8GB. Some things however still need improvement. Like the weight, which is too high; the N81 8GB is even heavier than its big brother, the N95. The camera inside the N81 is unfortunately only a 2 Megapixel digital camera. HSDPA is lacking which makes mobile internet kind of slow. You can hardly tell one numeric key from the other, which makes writing a text message very difficult with the N81 8GB. And that is why the type of consumer the Nokia N81 8GB aims at might not choose this device so easily. Besides the aforementioned improvements necessary, the device is well-structured and well thought-out. The ‘dedicated multimedia keys’ are a welcoming function and enable you to scroll through the multimedia files quickly and easily. The internal memory of 8GB is a nice addition; you can put virtually anything on the internal memory of the N81…The Nokia N81 is a recommendable phone for Multimedia lovers and gadget freaks! The Nokia N81 is also recommendable for those who consider the N95 8GB too expensive but still want to go for a high quality handset for a reasonable price. Link.
dialaphone reviews the Nokia N81 (8GB) and writes, “A phone hasn’t been just a phone for a long time, it’s now a camera phone, music phone or whatever other application the manufacturer has chosen to make its secondary (although sometimes it feels like primary) function over simply making and receiving calls. Nokia have excellent examples of music and camera phones in their range and have always seemed keen to add a gaming phone to their line-up, but have as yet been unable to satisfy this difficult market. However, is the N81 going to change that?..Available in either grey or blue colours and as an 8GB version or 12MB version with a MicroSD slot and supplied 2GB card, the N81 is a very versatile model, let down only by its overall size and weight and the ordinary camera.” Link.
