HTC Touch Dual Reviews
CNET UK reviews the HTC Touch Dual and writes, “Of course, specs-wise, that handset already exists in the form of the HTC TyTN II but in terms of design, we really prefer the Touch. A combination of those two devices would be amazing, but for now you’ll have to settle for either of the two. We’re also hoping that with the possible introduction of Windows Mobile 7 soon, devices like these aren’t just finger-friendly to a point but offer a complete stylus-free environment.” Link.
PC Pro reviews the HTC Touch Dual and writes, “There’s no denying the underlying awkwardness of Windows Mobile stops it from being a credible competitor to the iPhone, but the HTC Touch Dual is worthy of consideration…For business people in need of push email and Exchange integration the keypad turns what was a good start into a practical business tool. And it’s a nice bonus that it still manages to be one of the sleekest and sexiest Windows Mobile devices around.” Link.
Pocket-lint reviews the HTC Touch Dual and writes, “The increase in processor speed and memory are both welcome changes…If HTC had kept the Wi-Fi in the device, then yes, but without this, it just lacks the increased functionality that having it offers…That, combined with the slighty tricky to use keys on the key pad mean that although we love this new offering from HTC, we’ll actually be sticking with the original Touch that we use for our everyday phone.” Link.
CNET Australia reviews the HTC Touch Dual and writes, “While the Touch Dual looks and feels like a consumer handset, the strengths and weaknesses of its various features points it directly at the business sector. The Dual can take pictures and play media but the current incarnation of Windows Mobile is way too dull to attract a wider market, even with TouchFlo to spice it up…The Touch Dual is the perfect smartphone for a business person who can do without features like GPS and Wi-Fi but still wants the strong business functionality of Windows Mobile. It makes a great alternative for people looking at the BlackBerry Pearl 8120 but who were turned off by the less-than-ideal 2.5G data speeds.” Link.
Digital Trends reviews the HTC Touch Dual and writes, “Released in Europe late last year, the HTC Dual Touch has become one of the most anticipated smartphones for 2008. It still isn’t available via an American carrier, but Dynamism.com let us test drive the unlocked device. The Dual Touch is a space-age combination of touchscreen, stylus and slide controls. A few quirks keep it from phone nirvana, but those looking for a powerful, albeit complex unit will be pleased….The HTC Dual Touch is a good looking, adaptable phone that is unlike anything on the market. Practical users will be annoyed with the overbearing options and abundant functions, but hardcore phone lovers will be happy to discover all its little tricks.” Link.
Australian PC Authority reviews the HTC Touch Dual and writes, “As usual, HTC has provided enhancements, allowing more productive use of the touchscreen. In particular, there are options for launching programs, viewing and zooming images and navigating the contacts list. But when it comes to writing emails or sending texts, you’re still dumped into the usual Windows Mobile 6 apps. The new keyboard helps, and it’s quite an engineering feat to include it for just an additional 2mm of thickness, but it exposes the limitations of a device with interface tweaks layered over the top of something originally designed for stylus operation. The finger-based screen interface of the iPhone goes to the heart of the device’s design philosophy and is more successful as a result…There’s no denying that the underlying awkwardness of Windows Mobile stops it from being a credible competitor to the (unavailable in Australia) iPhone, but the HTC Touch Dual is worthy of consideration in its own right. For business people in need of push email and Exchange integration, it offers a very sleek and sexy way of doing it.” Link.
MobileTechReview has a review of the HTC Touch Dual and writes, “I have too many phones on my desk, including a Nokia N95-3, LG Vu, iPhone, HTC Touch Diamond, Treo 750, Samsung BlackJack II and more. Yet I find myself gravitating to the Touch Dual thanks to it’s comfortable and pocketable design, fast 3G, Windows Mobile power/tweak-ability and HTC’s TouchFLO “classic” which speeds access to common tasks and adds an element of fun without bogging down the device. It’s cute more than it’s sexy, competent rather than bleeding edge and it’s US-friendly. It takes the original Touch design and extends it significantly with a keyboard, faster CPU, better performance and 3G. Not bad. The market challenge among import-loving Americans is that it doesn’t offer all the bells and whistles like GPS, FM radio and WiFi. But then it does offer a US warranty and a more friendly return policy than most online imports. With strong 3G service and an AT&T unlimited data plan, I haven’t pined for WiFi, though folks in EDGE areas might.” Link.
CNET reviews the HTC Touch Dual and writes, “…While still offering the TouchFLO interface, the Touch Dual features an integrated slide-out 20-key QWERTY keyboard that facilitates entering text and composing messages. In addition, it’s the first smartphone to ship with Windows Mobile 6.1 in the United States, and supports our 3G bands (note: supports AT&T’s 850/1900MHz HSPDA/UMTS band). We will say that for the unlocked price of $549 (we’re talking about Nokia N95 prices here), we would have liked to have seen the inclusion of Wi-Fi or GPS. Still, there’s a lot of power packed into the compact device. The HTC Touch Dual is available now at Best Buy stores and online…The HTC Touch Dual offers more functionality and ease of use with the addition of Windows Mobile 6.1 and a tactile keyboard to make it one of the most compact and powerful touch-screen smartphones, but we’d still like to see the inclusion of Wi-Fi or GPS, especially for the price.” Link.
InfoSync reviews the HTC Touch Dual and writes, “HTC has improved upon the Windows Mobile interface with their own TouchFLO overlay, and we found TouchFLO to be very responsive on this Touch Dual. We especially like the Brady Bunch-style speed dialing screen, and we discovered a pop-up menu for messaging that appeared whenever we opened the SureType keyboard, with easy access to e-mail, messaging and a few other features in which typing is useful…It isn’t as slick or clever as the Apple iPhone interface, but it makes Windows Mobile a much more pleasant experience. Of course, this overshadows some of the visual advances made in WinMo 6.1, which comes loaded on this phone, but that only goes to show that HTC’s designs are still more functional.” Link.
PC World reviews the HTC Touch Dual and writes, “When HTC released the Touch last year, Windows Mobile had an imperfect champion. It was no iPhone killer, but it was certainly ready to put out a hit on Apple’s handset. Ultimately, though we liked the HTC phone’s first take, we found a couple of minor issues that kept it from scoring high. Enter the Touch Dual, a quad-band GSM phone that adds a slide-out keypad and other improvements on its predecessor…Thankfully, some of the Touch Dual’s design changes were for the better. For one thing, the MicroSD Card slot is now on the bottom-left side of the device. Popping in new cards is much easier–good news for anybody with loads of files.” Link.
Brighthand reviews the HTC Touch Dual and writes, “The Touch Dual tries to combine the best of both worlds, a touchscreen-centric device with a physical text-entry system. I think that this can certainly be done, and done elegantly. But I’m not convinced that the Touch Dual is that device…Furthermore, the Dual doesn’t really offer anything to make itself stand out. With the upcoming models from Apple, Samsung, and even HTC itself that offer better screens, GPS, and Wi-Fi, the Dual’s spec sheet looks decidedly unimpressive.” Link.
