HTC Shift Reviews

PC Pro reviews the HTC Shift X9500 and writes, “There’s no arguing that many aspects of the Shift’s design are rather fine, but its limitations are impossible to ignore. Its seeming inability to make voice calls means that you’ll still need to carry a traditional phone around, which is a missed opportunity…HTC should be congratulated for making the Shift more usable than any UMPC before it, but when many of its abilities, and those of its ilk, are duplicated by the substantially cheaper combination of a smartphone and an Asus Eee PC, it’s easy to wonder what all the fuss was about.” Link.

CNET Australia reviews the HTC Shift and writes, “It sounds like there’s a lot bad to say about the Shift — in reality it’s quite fine for what it is. Unfortunately UMPC is turning out to be a really bad idea, especially in view of the price and the ever-increasing complexity and power of mobile phones…At AU$1,999 the Shift is targeting the luxury market, but this position makes no sense. If you want a small laptop, you can get an EeePC at AU$499, which covers most major functions people need. If you want a useful portable device that can SMS, browse the Web, has a unified interface with the added bonus of being able to ring people, get an iPhone. If you’re a mobile e-mail junky, then any Blackberry will rightfully put the Shift in its place.” Link.

CNET UK reviews the HTC Shift and writes, “…the HTC Shift, looks good on paper. It’s small, packs a touchscreen, has a slide-out keyboard, and can be contorted into a laptop orientation. But can this £900 device be taken seriously, or is it just an expensive and ultimately flawed experiment?..We’d only recommend the HTC Shift to two types of user: those who are exceptionally wealthy or those who are exceptionally ridiculous. It doesn’t meet the system requirements to run its operating system and it’s hopelessly expensive. Buy yourself a newly updated Eee PC 900, or even — dare we say it — a Samsung Q1 Ultra.” Link.

Australian PC Authority reviews the HTC Shift and writes, “There’s no arguing that many aspects of the Shift’s design are excellent, but limitations such as this are impossible to ignore. Its inability to make voice calls means you’ll still need to carry a traditional phone around, which is a missed opportunity…HTC should be congratulated for making the shift more usable than any other UMPC before it, but it’s heavy for it’s size and battery life is poor. When many of its abilities can be duplicated by the cheaper combination of a smartphone and an Asus Eee PC, it’s easy to wonder what all the fuss is about.” Link.

IT Reviews does a review of the HTC Shift and writes, “For that you need to switch to Vista Business. The 800Mhz Intel A110 processor (the Atom’s predecessor) and 1GB of RAM are simply not up to the job of running Vista. It runs slow, and using it can be frustrating…Battery life is poor, too. We suspect you’ll be charging twice a day and maybe more if you want to use the Wi-Fi and HSDPA…The Shift proves you can put Vista in an inadequately small and underpowered computer and bring it to market. But that doesn’t mean it is worth buying.” Link.
