BlackBerry 8830 Reviews
PCMag has a review of the BlackBerry 8830 and writes, “Whether you’re roaming or not, calls sound terrific on this phone. Volume from both the earpiece and speakerphone is loud too, and voices sound deep and clear, without distortion. I connected both Plantronics Voyager 510 and Pulsar 590 Bluetooth headsets to the phone, and you can use a wired headset through the standard, 2.5-mm headset jack. Voice dialing is easy with the built-in VoiceSignal suite, and talk time is excellent, over five and a half hours.” Link.
LaptopMag has a review of the BlackBerry 8830 and writes, “Featuring unique dual-network capability, this smart phone will automatically switch between CDMA and GSM signals when roaming globally. Toss in RIM’s airtight push e-mail, a QWERTY keyboard, and a media player, and you have a fully loaded smart phone that will keep globe-trotters connected, productive, and entertained. … the BlackBerry 8830 World Edition is reasonably priced given its global roaming capability. The BlackBerry 8800 from AT&T can do the same thing today and offers a built-in GPS receiver for the same price, but the 8830 is a very good choice for people who want fast EV-DO data performance stateside.” Link.
CNET has a review of the BlackBerry 8830 and writes, “General performance on the BlackBerry 8830 was snappy. We didn’t experience any noticeable delays when opening or working in various apps. With the boost of EV-DO speeds, browsing the Web on the 8830 was a much more pleasurable experience than on the EDGE-only BlackBerry 8800. Even graphics-intensive pages like CNET.com and CNN.com loaded quickly. We were also impressed with the multimedia performance. Music playback sounded decent over the phone’s speakers, producing a richer sound than other smart phones we’ve tested. We do wish, however, the 8830 was equipped with a 3.5mm headphone jack like the BlackBerry Curve. Watching video clips in short, few-minute spurts is fine.” Link.
MobileTechReview has a review of the BlackBerry 8830 and writes, “The BlackBerry 8830 offers something special for CDMA users who travels overseas: a GSM radio that allows them to use the same device and roam on GSM networks to make calls in over 150 countries and to receive emails in over 60 countries. As with the BlackBerry 8800 for GSM-only users, the BlackBerry 8830 should be a natural upgrade for enterprises that seek more security in the new BlackBerry server software and for users who want to expand memory with the newly added microSD card slot. Besides the excellent push email services, the built-in GPS with BlackBerry Maps and Bluetooth 2.0, the sleek look alone will get you interested. If you are a BlackBerry veteran, the new design should give you a much needed phone fashion update.” Link.
Infosync has a review of the BlackBerry 8830 and gives it a 75% rating: “Business users won’t be disappointed by the device’s e-mail and scheduling prowess, it is a BlackBerry, after all, but considering this phone represents the current pinnacle of BlackBerry devices, we expected more. Besides our old complaints about the BlackBerry interface, we would have liked better battery life, some useful productivity apps, and a better Web browsing experience. The lack of GPS is disappointing, and we think business travelers would have appreciated a better music experience. If you are deciding between the 8800 and this phone, we think the 8830’s better tethered modem support and faster Web browsing, on Opera perhaps, makes it the better choice. Still, it’s a close call, and GPS fans might prefer the 8800, even with slower EDGE networking, to the 8830.” Link.
PCMag reivews the BlackBerry 8830 (Sprint), the verdict is, “In Sprint’s lineup, the BlackBerry 8830 aligns itself against the Windows Mobile-powered Sprint Mogul PPC-6800 and the Palm Treo 755p. If you’re planning on traveling to Europe for business, of course, the 8830 stands alone, since it’s the only decent option for Sprint. Within the U.S., the decision’s a little tougher. I suggest you pick a device based on your primary applications. Purely for phone, e-mail, and Web browsing use, the BlackBerry reigns supreme. Its elegance, ease of use, stability, and speed are what earn it our Editors’ Choice. If you need to edit Microsoft Office documents or want smooth integration with Windows Media Player for your music and videos, pick the Mogul instead. If you’re in an office based on Good Mobile Messaging or are very comfortable with the Palm platform, I say try the Treo 755p.” Link.
MobileBurn reviews the RIM BlackBerry 8830 and writes, “There is no denying that the RIM BlackBerry 8830 is a nice device, especially for CDMA users that need to leave North America. It is modern looking, yet still offers the same smartphone functionality and the push email system of the older BlackBerry phones. Its user interface might seem a bit vast and archaic to the uninitiated, but I think that the typical road warrior will manage to adapt to it quickly enough. But RIM still has a long way to go before it can expect mass acceptance of their phones by Joe Consumer…With that said, I still think that the 8830 is a good phone. Save for a camera, it has the basic multimedia capabilities that people want, it is fairly compact, and offers great text input and a novel trackball for navigation. I give it a “Recommended” rating. If you are looking for something a little more compact, with a camera, check out RIM’s BlackBerry Curve 8300, a device that I like even more.” Link.
Mobile Devices reviews the BlackBerry 8830 and writes, “For the traveling professional, or anyone who needs to keep in touch while traveling, this may be the smart phone that you have been waiting for. The RIM Blackberry 8830 “Cyclone” is a very solid device overall, and is one of the best smart phones on the market today. This phone has a great set of features such as “world coverage,” GPS, media player, and a good interface. The performance of this device, including battery life and processing, is on par with any other smart phone on the market today.” Link.
Ign reviews the BlackBerry 8833 and writes, “The BlackBerry 8830 has a lot going for it, but for every positive aspect that you point out, you could also bring up a negative counterpoint. The call quality is adequate, the data management is excellent, but when it comes to anything outside of the realm of business applications, the 8830 falls flat. Simply put, if you’re looking for a multimedia device, look elsewhere. Images and music management is handled rather well, but that’s about it. However, if you simply want something that will let you make calls, check email and surf the mobile web, this BlackBerry would be a solid choice.” Link.
