“The BlackBerry 8820 is an extraordinary business phone for people who really care about mobile communications and productivity. It features all the renowned power and usability of the BlackBerry platform with executive class styling and unprecedented connectivity features, including cellular, Wi-Fi and built-in GPS,” said Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO at RIM. “The BlackBerry 8820 complements our carrier partners’ cellular networks with the added ability to stay connected via Wi-Fi at home, through hotspots and corporate campuses.”

Wi-Fi Connectivity

The BlackBerry 8820 smartphone supports the 802.11 a/b/g Wi-Fi standards to enable data access over Wi-Fi connections in the enterprise, as well as through public hotspots and wireless home networks. The smartphone works in conjunction with both BlackBerry® Enterprise Server and BlackBerry® Internet Service and can seamlessly switch between cellular networks and a Wi-Fi network to allow users to access email, Instant Messaging, organizer, web browsing and other mobile data applications.

To meet various security requirements, the BlackBerry 8820 is compliant with Wi-Fi security protocols including WEP (Wireless Equivalency Protocol), WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) and WPA2, as well as Cisco Compatible Extensions for simple, secure connectivity with Cisco wireless solutions. For enterprises that require Wi-Fi users to access the corporate network through a VPN (Virtual Private Network), the BlackBerry 8820 includes IPSec-based software that supports the most commonly deployed VPN gateways from vendors including Cisco, Check Point and others.

The BlackBerry 8820 also supports UMA, enabling wireless carriers to offer a fixed-mobile convergence service for both business and home use. With a UMA solution in place, the BlackBerry 8820 can also seamlessly switch voice calls between a wireless carrier’s cellular network and a Wi-Fi network.

The BlackBerry 8820 is a quad-band GSM/GPRS and EDGE-enabled smartphone that provides global wireless voice and data capabilities with best-in-class performance. The BlackBerry 8820 features include:

- World Class Phone - The BlackBerry 8820 is a world-class mobile phone with advanced noise cancellation for enhanced audio performance and easy-to-use phone features including Speaker Independent Voice Recognition for Voice Activated Dialing (VAD), smart dialing, conference calling, speed dialing and call forwarding, as well as dedicated “send”, “end” and “mute” keys. It features a high quality, low-distortion speakerphone and Bluetooth® 2.0 for use with hands-free headsets, car kits and other Bluetooth peripherals. Support for polyphonic, mp3 and MIDI ringtones is also included.

- Built-in GPS - Through its built-in GPS, the BlackBerry 8820 can pinpoint its location and provide “out-of-the-box” support for a wide variety of location-based applications and services, including BlackBerry® Maps.

- microSD / microSDHC Expansion Memory - The BlackBerry 8820 includes a microSD expansion memory slot that can support both microSD (up to 2GB) and microSDHC (4GB to 32GB) memory cards. 4GB memory cards are available today, and 8GB cards are expected to be available later this year.

- BlackBerry Services - The BlackBerry 8820 can operate with BlackBerry Internet Service, giving users the ability to manage up to 10 supported personal and corporate email accounts, as well as BlackBerry Enterprise Server, enabling advanced security and IT administration features within IBM® Lotus® Domino®, Microsoft® Exchange and Novell® GroupWise® environments.

- Application Support - The BlackBerry wireless platform gives customers the capability to deploy a variety of applications. Thousands of applications and business solutions from third party software providers can further extend the BlackBerry platform to support business needs such as CRM, sales force automation, field services, business intelligence, supply chain management and continuity of operations, as well as a broad range of industry-specific applications for sectors including health care, law enforcement, government, financial services, insurance, pharmaceutical, professional services, real estate, manufacturing, wholesale and retail.

- Multimedia - The BlackBerry 8820 supports the Bluetooth stereo audio profile (A2DP/AVRCP) and comes with the most recent BlackBerry media player refinements, allowing users to play music and search by simply typing the title, genre, artist or album name. Videos can also be played in full screen mode. The BlackBerry 8820 comes with a new and powerful desktop media manager - the Roxio® Media Manager for BlackBerry® - which was developed with Sonic® and based on the award-winning Roxio Easy Media Creator® 9. The desktop media manager software introduces a new level of simplicity by allowing users to easily search for media files on their computer, view and organize them, create MP3 music files from CDs, add audio tags, create playlists and automatically copy or convert pictures, music and videos for optimal playback on the smartphone.

- Removable Battery - The BlackBerry 8820 comes with an ultra-thin, high-capacity, removable battery that further extends the exceptional battery life for which BlackBerry handsets are known.

- Accessories - The BlackBerry 8820 comes with a complement of accessories in the box, including a headset, travel charger, USB cable and holster.

The BlackBerry 8820 will be available from select wireless carriers around the world in the coming weeks. AT&T is scheduled to launch the BlackBerry 8820 in the U.S. later this summer.

(i) Keyboard also available in AZERTY and QWERTZ configurations to support different language groups.

BlackBerry 8820 Reviews

TrustedReviews has a review of the BlackBerry 8820 and they write, “With the 8820, RIM has essentially taken an already fantastic business tool and by adding Wi-Fi, made it even better. It’s what the 8800 should have been from the start.” Link.

Register Hardware reviews the RIM BlackBerry 8820 and here’s their verdict, “The addition of Wi-Fi to an already extremely good handset is no bad thing - it’s just a shame that it’s not as good as it could be. Tying it into to a UMA service makes sense from an ease of use point of view, but the lack of native SIP support means you can’t pick and choose your Voip provider. Application support for Wi-Fi isn’t quite there yet either, which means there are some teething problems, but these should be easy enough to sort out. Despite some shortcomings, a BlackBerry with Wi-Fi is still better than one without so if you’ve got the choice then you’re better off going for the 8820 over the 8800, as it does everything the latter can and a little bit more.” Link.

Pocket-lint reviews the BlackBerry 8820 and says, “We aren’t going to say that we don’t want the wireless connectivity because we do, however we also want HSDPA or at the very least 3G…Standing in the shop having to make a decision over this or the 8800 and its easy. It’s this every time, and we wouldn’t be surprised if RIM phase out the 8800 shortly - I mean who wouldn’t want Wi-Fi given the choice?” Link.

LAPTOP reviews the BlackBerry 8820 and writes, “Mobile workers who consider Wi-Fi a check-off item when shopping for a smart phone won’t be disappointed by RIM’s implementation, but they won’t be blown away, either. We consider the 802.11 connection a good backup plan for EDGE, especially when you can’t get a strong cellular signal indoors. So long as you don’t need a built-in camera, the 8820’s snappy overall performance, GPS navigation, and multimedia features make it a solid choice for AT&T customers. Others may want to wait and see what RIM cooks up for T-Mobile.” Link.

PC World reviews the BlackBerry 8820 and writes, “The business-oriented 8820 lacks a camera and some of the other consumer-friendly applications (such as access to popular instant messaging clients) found on other BlackBerry devices. The support for Wi-Fi is an excellent tradeoff, however, and the result is a sleek cell phone that delivers speedy data service even when your cellular coverage is spotty.” Link.

CNET reviews the BlackBerry 8820 and writes, “Today, AT&T and Research In Motion officially released the RIM BlackBerry 8820, the first BlackBerry to offer integrated Wi-Fi. The 8820 supports 802.11a/b/g standards and is compliant with Wi-Fi security protocols, giving users another avenue to connect to the Web–a good thing since the device shows no love for 3G just yet. It also continues to offer Bluetooth and GPS support like its older sibling, the RIM BlackBerry 8800, as well as push e-mail and multimedia. It’s a device built with the business user in mind and definitely won’t have the mass appeal of a BlackBerry Pearl or BlackBerry Curve. There’s not even a camera option. That said, for the intended audience the 8820 will certainly deliver the goods and performance. The RIM BlackBerry 8820 will be available starting on September 20 for $299.99 with a two-year contract and after rebates.” Link.

IT Reviews the BlackBerry 8820 and writes, “The 8820 is not a huge leap forward from the 8800 and may appeal more to businesses than consumers because of its black colouring and relatively large size. But it is a very competent device and the addition of Wi-Fi will matter to some.” Link.

PC Mag reviews the BlackBerry 8820 and writes, “The new BlackBerry 8820 for AT&T adds three varieties of Wi-Fi to an already great e-mail handheld. In fact, this communicator’s other attributes are so good that after my testing period, I was left wondering what benefits Wi-Fi abilities really offer. Independent of the Wi-Fi, though, the 8820 should be on any business customer’s short list. Link.

PC World reviews the BlackBerry 8820 and writes, “The business-oriented 8820 lacks a camera and some of the other consumer-friendly applications (such as access to popular instant messaging clients) found on other BlackBerry devices. The support for Wi-Fi is an excellent tradeoff, however, and the result is a sleek cell phone that delivers speedy data service even when your cellular coverage is spotty. Link.

PDAStreet reviews the BlackBerry 8820 and writes, ” Overall the 8820 is a very solid BlackBerry, especially if you can get by without a camera or if you need Wi-Fi and GPS built in more than a camera.” Link.

Infosync reviews the BlackBerry 8820 (T-Mobile) and writes, “The BlackBerry 8820 on T-Mobile gets it right when it comes to Wi-Fi, and we definitely like the HotSpot @Home service. We’d like to see plenty more improvements to the aging BlackBerry UI, including a nicer looking calendar and more productivity apps, but we think some business customers will find the UMA capabilities useful, and perhaps even cost-cutting. We could lament the lack of good multimedia options, but there is always the BlackBerry Curve and the Pearl for that. The 8820 might be the priciest of the bunch, but it also might offer the right mix of features for BlackBerry fans.” Link.

The Washingtonpost reviews the BlackBerry 8820 (T-Mobile) and writes, “I liked theBlackBerry 8820 for the AT&T networkwhen it debuted last fall. I also liked T-Mobile’s HotSpot@Home service when I tested it on theBlackBerry Curve 8320, because it allows you to make voice calls over Wi-Fi. So it stands to reason that I would like the T-Mobile version of the BlackBerry 8820, which includes support for the HotSpot@Home service. And I do…Many of the phone’s features seem to have been designed primarily for business users. The 8820 supports Bluetooth 2.0, and (like all BlackBerry devices) it handles e-mail beautifully. It can support up to ten personal and business e-mail accounts. The full QWERTY keyboard is easy to type on, and the 320-by-240-pixel display is big and bright. Though the phone comes with built-in GPS, you need a $10-per-month subscription to TeleNav’s GPS Navigator   service (available through T-Mobile) to take advantage of this feature.” Link.

So it stands to reason that I would like the T-Mobile version of the BlackBerry 8820, which includes support for the HotSpot@Home service. And I do…The 8820 is available from T-Mobile for $350 with a two-year contract. If you’re in the market for an excellent messaging phone that has strong business features, this one is worth considering.” Link.
