BlackBerry 8800 Reviews

LaptopMag has a review of the BlackBerry 8800 and writes, “Overall, the BlackBerry 8800 is an excellent smart phone and a surprisingly good navigator. At $299, it’s priced between the sleeker, more multimedia-friendly Samsung Sync ($199) and the more powerful Cingular 8525 ($399), which offers both HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity. Whether it’s $150 better than Cingular’s BlackBerry Pearl depends on how much of a premium you place on having a full-sized keyboard, up to five hours of talk time, and GPS capability. We think it’s worth it.” Link.

CNET has a review of the BlackBerry 8800 and writes, “We tested the quadband (GSM 850/900/1800/1900; EDGE) RIM BlackBerry 8800 world phone in San Francisco using Cingular Wireless service, and call quality was decent. Voices sounded a bit muffled on our end, and our friends reported the same results. It’s nothing that prevented us from carrying on a conversation, but things certainly could have been better. Surprisingly, sound quality greatly improved when we activated the speakerphone. Everything was clear, and volume was more than adequate. … Despite some minor issues, the RIM BlackBerry 8800 offers mobile professionals a well-rounded smart phone with added multimedia functions, GPS, and push-to-talk capabilities. That said, messaging remains its forte.” Link.

Vnunet has a review the BlackBerry 8800 and writes, “The 8800 takes the styling and roller-ball navigation of the Pearl but packages it for the traditional Blackberry user that wants a full keyboard and large display. … Despite losing the camera, the 8800 retains a media player so it can play back video and audio, and the built-in speaker is pretty good. If you run out of storage, you can also expand it via the MicroSD slot - this is accessible without having to remove the battery, unlike with the Pearl. If you like the idea of the Pearl, but prefer a full keyboard, then the 8800 is the device for you. It’s bigger and lacks the camera, but it does have a larger screen and built-in GPS - so at least you’ll never get lost.” Link.

Pocket-lint hs a review of the BlackBerry 8800 and writes, “This might be the best looking BlackBerry to date, and at its core job it works a treat, however RIM are missing quite a few tricks here. We can forgive the lack of a camera - after all this is designed for business users, however the lack 3G, HSDPA or Wi-Fi support is shocking compared to the competition and the GPS isn’t nearly half as good as it should be. Good, but not all that it could be.” Link.

Infosync has a review of the BlackBerry 8800 and gives it a 70% (Good) rating, writing, “The BlackBerry 8800 has a great feature set, including the well-designed trackball, GPS-navigation, an excellent microphone and speaker for calling, as well as a bright, clear screen. Still, the interface holds the phone back in almost every way. Even worse than the lack of 3G networking, a feature most true business users won’t miss, is the poor interface design, which hasn’t changed noticeably from monochromatic days of BlackBerrys past. With Windows Mobile 6 on the near-horizon, and Apple’s magical iPhone interface not too far off, RIM needs to redesign the interface from the ground up to remain competitive. The device does a great job with e-mail and calling, admittedly its primary functions, but should be a much more pleasant phone to use.” Link.

PCWorld has a hands-on review of the BlackBerry 8800 and writes, “the 8800 is an excellent e-mail device. It supports up to 10 e-mail accounts and set up is a breeze. The device notifies you as soon as a message arrives, and content is easy to read on the 2.5-inch 320-by-240 display. Instant messaging is unfortunately limited to the BlackBerry Messenger application; support for the more popular AIM, Yahoo, or MSN IM would have been a nice touch. While the 8800 unforgivably lacks a camera, it does include the music and video players found on the multimedia-friendly Pearl.” Link.

Christopher Null at Yahoo! Tech has a review of the BlackBerry 8800 and writes, “the BlackBerry OS remains pretty much the same as it’s been in recent incarnations. Battery life was 7 hours of talk time in my tests (vs. 8:20 on the 8700g), definitely a serviceable amount of time. The phone is also a world phone that boasts service in over 100 countries. (I only tested the one.) There’s even a music and video player (both work well), and a microSD card slot (alas, under the back cover, near the battery). My only big complaints: No camera, and no 3G service. But those are rather minor issues on what is otherwise a real standout of a smartphone. At $300 with service plan, it’s fairly priced, too.” Link.

Trusted Reviews has a review of the BlackBerry 8800 and writes, “The 8800 is a gorgeous device. RIM has taken the business-style Blackberry, given it a swanky makeover and some multimedia hoops, opened up email access to the masses then put it out through standard retail channels. This makes it a great purchase for small businesses, and die-hard Crackberry addicts will find that this gives them an even more enticing and appealing dose of their drug of choice. The GPS and Maps software isn’t quite there, but we can hope that a firmware and software update improves this in the future. For now, the 8800 is undoubtedly the email device of choice for anyone that wants push messaging - and the stunning good looks are just an added bonus.” Link.

MobileTechReview has a review of the BlackBerry 8800 and writes, “The BlackBerry Pearl may have been the first to have a sexy, modern look; but for the very large full-QWERTY BlackBerry user base, the BlackBerry 8800 is the first hard core BlackBerry with the new look. While the push email, messaging and PIM functions remain strong, the BlackBerry 8800 adds a new navigation package and longer battery life. It should be a natural upgrade for the enterprise as it offers more security that works with the new server version 4.2 (including the ability to remotely wipe a memory card in the new microSD slot). And for the individual users, the BlackBerry is shiny and slim enough for those who want a solid push email solution on a QWERTY device. Who’d thought that a BlackBerry could be 0.25 in. thinner than the Treo 750?” Link.

CNET Australia has a first take review of the BlackBerry 8800, which is expected to be available in Australia in May. They write, “RIM’s latest smartphone, the BlackBerry 8800, improves on the 8700 and combines the style of BlackBerry’s consumer-focused, candybar-shaped Pearl 8100 with the look and feel of previous PDA-shaped models sporting QWERTY keypads. … While not a radical departure from the previous model, the incremental improvements should entice existing and new customers alike, though the lack of 3G support may be a barrier for some.” Link.

CNET has a review of the BlackBerry 8800 and writes, “We tested the quadband (GSM 850/900/1800/1900; EDGE) RIM BlackBerry 8800 in San Francisco using T-Mobile service, We didn’t experience any dropped calls, and the call quality was decent. Voices sounded a bit muffled on our end, and our friends reported the same results. It’s nothing that prevented us from carrying on a conversation, but things certainly could have been better. Surprisingly, sound quality greatly improved when we activated the speakerphone. … Despite some minor issues, the RIM BlackBerry 8800 offers mobile professionals a well-rounded smart phone with added multimedia functions and integrated GPS. That said, messaging remains its forte.” Link.

PCPro has a review of the BlackBerry 8800 and writes, “Although the 8800 is a great phone, the real emphasis of a device like this is push email, and that’s an area where BlackBerry has always excelled. The internet-based “prosumer” version works well, but we also reviewed a full-monty enterprise device, hooked up to a corporate BlackBerry Enterprise Server. It performed flawlessly, with emails often arriving on the handheld a few seconds before they’d show up in Outlook. … For corporate users needing the best mobile email and enterprise application platform, the 8800 should be at, or near, the top of their shopping list. As an all-round smartphone for small business users, the lack of 3G, Wi-Fi and a camera may limit its appeal.” Link.

SMBEdge has a review of the BlackBerry 8800 and writes, “Using the quadband (GSM 850/900/1800/1900; EDGE) BlackBerry 8800 as a phone presented no real problems or surprises. Call quality was decent with voices sounding mostly clear and crisp. … Despite the lack of 3G or Wi-Fi, this is still a great messaging device. Users who need to be connected by email wherever they are can certainly take a good look at the BlackBerry 8800. Between this and the Pearl, we preferred the full QWERTY keyboard and functionality of the 8800.” Link.

PCWorld Canada has a review of the BlackBerry 8800 and writes, “Like all BlackBerry devices, the 8800 handles e-mail exceptionally well. It can support ten accounts, including POP3, IMAP 4, and Web-based e-mail; and adding them is a breeze. For personal accounts, you simply enter your user name and password, on the phone or online; and within minutes, messages are delivered directly to your phone. For business accounts, you can sync the BlackBerry Enterprise server with Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Domino, or Novell Groupwise. … The BlackBerry 8800’s strengths–in particular, its battery life, excellent e-mail handling, and built-in GPS features–outweigh its minuses. If you don’t need a camera with your PDA phone, the 8800 is worth a look.” Link.

MobileBurn has a review of the RIM BlackBerry 8800 and writes, “the RIM BlackBerry 8800 is a very nice device. It is modern looking, yet still offers the same smartphone functionality and the push email system of the older BlackBerry phones. Its user interface might seem a bit vast and archaic to the uninitiated, but I think that the typical road warrior will manage to adapt to it quickly enough. … Save for a camera, it has the basic multimedia capabilities that people want, it is fairly compact, and offers great text input and a novel trackball for navigation. I give it a “Recommended” rating.” Link.

PC World reviews the BlackBerry 8800 and here’s what they say, “If ease of use and e-mail are paramount in your world, the 8800 is the ultimate device at the moment, and the music and video players are just good enough to be fun. But power users may lean towards the Samsung BlackJack instead, with its higher-speed modem and better music and video syncing with Windows Media Player.” Link.
