PC Pro reviews the Sony HDR-TG3 and writes, “Because of its size it is marketed as a carry-everywhere camera, so it’s a sensible design choice that the case well-built as well as being compact. The body is constructed of desirably sturdy titanium, which reduces the weight as much as it must increase the price, but also adds a great deal of protection for the vulnerable innards. But though there is no fragile hard disk (the camera relies entirely on Sony Memory Stick flash cards) the optics are still the weak link, and susceptible to rough treatment…The small size does mean that some useful features have been dropped. There is no hot shoe, for example, so it’s impossible to add an external flash or light, and there is also no way to connect an external microphone or set of headphones. Thankfully, Sony has seen fit to include a built-in flash and 5.1 channel microphone which do a decent job of making sure that most users won’t need to add any external peripherals.” Link.
Trusted Reviews has a review of the Sony HDR-TG3 and writes, “Most of Sony’s high definition camcorders use a CMOS sensor of around 1/3in in size. But to enable its miniature proportions, the TG3 relies on a smaller 1/5in sensor, with 2.36-megapixels. This ClearVid CMOS sensor is assisted by Sony’s BIONZ image processor, about which very little information is available. Sony claims the TG3 captures Full HD, and its top AVCHD quality mode records at 1,920 x 1,080. However, only 1.43-megapixels of the CMOS sensor are actually used to capture video, which means the recording resolution is interpolated to be 1,920 x 1,080. Sony adds a small amount of interpolation for digital photography, too. The TG3 offers 2,304 x 1,296 pixel stills in 16 x 9 mode, and 2,304 x 1,728 pixel stills in 4 x 3, which is good enough for the occasional snap…The Sony HDR-TG3 is another bold step from Sony, the company which broke HD into the UK market and dominated for the first year or so. The poor low light performance will be a worry if you want to shoot family events in darkened rooms. But for a sub-300g camcorder slim enough to fit in a jacket pocket, the TG3 is an outstanding achievement.” Link.
Techradar reviews the Sony HDR-TG3E and writes, “We were impressed by the quality of the movies we took. No doubt the Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens played its part, but the Sony Intelligent Face Detection system also did a ?ne job. We could see it working as it placed a white box around as many as eight faces in each scene…The real surprise is that you can buy the Sony for less than £500 and we consider it good value indeed.” Link.
