Camcorderinfo reviews the Sony HDR-HC9 and writes, “The Sony HDR-HC9 is a good high definition camcorder. It’s also Sony’s only 2008 HDV model, so your only other choice is to go back to 2007 or earlier if you want to stay in the Sony family…If Sony has pleased you in the past, the HDR-HC9 will please you again. For those who are serious about having the best video quality, consider the Canon HV30. If you want to wash your hands of tape camcorders forever, look to high definition flash media, such as the Panasonic HDC-SD9 or Canon HF10. Hold off on Sony’s HDR-CX7, as it’s due for a replacement soon.” Link.
CEN reviews the Sony HDR-HCR and writes, “Overall, this is yet another progression in an already established lineup of camcorders. If tape-based workflow is preferred, lightweight is important, and cost is a factor, this is absolutely the best choice in its class, in my opinion. The encoder is clearly improved, as is the DSP. The manual features are much appreciated. I do wish we had the ability to control by fstop, but that is a feature relegated to higher end products.” Link.
Trusted Reviews has a review of the Sonny HDR-HC9E and writes, “Sony was the first manufacturer to introduce consumer high definition cameras to the UK in the shape of the HDR-HC1E, and although manufacturers are now turning away from the tape-based HDV format, Sony has continued to release models. The HDR-HC9E represents the fourth generation of Sony consumer HDV camcorders, and is essentially a development of the HDR-HC7E…. Sony has consistently been dumbing down its high-end consumer HD camcorders. Where the HDR-HC1E was an enthusiast’s dream come true, its successors have increasingly focused on ease of use over semi-professional features. Although the HDR-HDC9E offers great image quality in all but the worst illumination, Canon’s HV20 beats it in this respect, and the very similar HV30 is likely to as well. The Canons also have more features for the budding professional, as well. So the HDR-HC9E is a great high-end choice for point-and-shoot HD video, but not one for more serious usage.” Link.
PC Pro reviews the Sony HDR-HC9E and writes, “Where the HDR-HC9E does deliver the goods is video quality in fully automatic shooting mode. In full sunny conditions, colours are vibrant and balanced, and the image sharp; the high performance continues under artificial illumination, although a bluish grain ruins the picture in the lowest light…For the time being, HDV still has a few years left in the more serious end of market, as its compression is less severe than current AVCHD models. But the HDR-HC9E sits between two target areas. It can’t compete with the pocketability of other mini cameras like the Panasonic HDC-SD9. And it lacks the enthusiast features and top-end image quality of the Canon HV20 or its successor, the HV30. Either way, the Sony falls a little short of the competition.” Link.
