Good Gear Guide reviews the Sony HDR-CX12 and writes, “Featuring a redesigned CMOS sensor with a gross pixel count of 5560k, a camera control dial for added manual precision, Sony’s new Smile Shutter technology for instant fuss-free photos and a 10.2-megapixel stills mode, it is one of the more consumer-friendly camcorders on the market. While the lack of an inbuilt hard drive may irk some users (instead, the CX12 records directly to Memory Stick), it remains an excellent, feature-rich model that won’t fail to impress..All up, we have very little to say against the HDR-CX12. It marries impressive high-def visuals to a slew of user-friendly features — all at a semi-affordable price. The inclusion of Smile Shutter technology and a camera control dial make it a worthy successor to the HDR-CX7K.” Link.
CNET Australia reviews the Sony HDR-CX12 and writes, “Our biggest bugbear with the CX7 was its limited storage capacity. Out of the box that camera was supplied with a 4GB Memory Stick that was good for 30 minutes of top quality footage, which, if you’re straying far from home, is but a drop in the vast ocean of time. This year’s model has been bundled with both a 4GB and an 8GB stick. By Sony’s calculations this should be good for around 75 minutes of highest quality filming — better, but an investment in extra cards is a must. With the supplied battery good for around 110 minutes of shooting — adequate for a day out — a spare battery should be on the shopping lists of all CX12 buyers.” Link.
Camcorderinfo reviews the Sony HDR-CX12 and writes, “Overall, the performance alone is a good reason to give the Sony HDR-CX12 our approval. It’s a strong camcorder. However, the competition is particularly strong in the category of high definition, solid state camcorders. The Canon HF11 (Review, Specs, Recent News, $1299.00) has more powerful manual control, multiple frame rates (1080/60i, 30P, and 24P), and a sharper looking image—not to mention 32GB of internal memory. The Sony HDR-CX12 only records to card memory, severely reducing recording times. Another compelling model is the Samsung SC-HMX20 (Review, Specs, Recent News, $619.00), which had astonishing low light performance, great ease of use and handling, and undoubtedly the sexiest design in camcorders this year.” Link.
