Engadget reviews the Samsung SC-HMX20C and writes, “Let us restate: the SC-HMX20C isn’t meant to be looked at seriously by pros. The $849.99 (or so) price tag is proof of that. For individuals seeking a small, easy to carry camcorder that will capture family vacations, impromptu get-togethers and your kid’s school play, we can certainly say this one’s worth the price of admission. If you’re looking for expert features and an XLR jack for connecting your boom mic, you won’t find that here. But the bundled CyberLink DVD Suite for HD (which includes PowerDVD 7.3, PowerProducer 4.2 and PowerDirector 6.0 for HD) was very much appreciated…For what it is (and for what it costs), Sammy’s latest HD camcorder excels. After a week with it, we simply couldn’t find enough niggles to tell you to look elsewhere if you’re already close to pulling the trigger. Do we wish the LCD backlight was a wee bit brighter? Sure. Do we wish the low-light performance was a smidgen better? Of course. But at the end of the day, is the SC-HMX20C a solid buy for the price? We think so. The OttawaCitizen reviews the Samsung SC-HMX20 and writes, “…This new camcorder, with its suggested price of $899, pretty well has it all. It has a 6.4-megapixel still camera so you can take good quality images, and it’s a full HD video camera that shoots at 1920 x 1080 resolution…If you’re looking for a good quality digital camcorder that can take stills or videos with equal aplomb, is easy to use, feature-packed and takes HD images, then you owe it to yourself to look around for this camera.” Link.

Camcorderinfo reviews the Samsung SC-HMX20 and writes, “Now for the good news. The Samsung SC-HMX20 is a dynamite performer for its price range. The huge, high resolution CMOS sensor was competitive (but not quite as good) as the Canon HF10 and Sony HDR-SR12 (Review, Specs, $1399.00) in bright light. In low light, the camcorder was a damn miracle worker—especially considering how far it came since the previous generation…Then there’s the sleek style. We put the SC-HMX20 side-by-side with competitors for a number of people, and every one of them preferred the look of the Samsung. We hate to say it, Canon and Sony, but you guys didn’t even come close. Considering the sleekness of the SC-HMX20, and its low-light prowess, this could be the perfect night life camcorder for club-hopping socialites.” Link.

PC World reviews the Samsung HMX20C and writes, “One of the most interesting aspects of the VP-HMX20C is its gargantuan 1/1.8in CMOS sensor. By contrast, the VP-HMX10 (XSA)’s sensor was only 1/4.5 inches wide. While this doesn’t affect the resolution per se, it does allow for larger individual pixels, which helps to reduce image noise. Consequently, the HMX20C’s image quality was immensely sharp and vibrant in most situations, despite its relatively small pixel count…All up, we were hugely impressed by this camcorder, despite its myriad faults. For the asking price, it’s hard to imagine a more accomplished or feature-rich offering. Two thumbs up.” Link.

Trusted Reviews has a review of the Samsung SC-HMX20 and writes, “The VP-HMX20 marks a sea change for Samsung. Whereas the majority of its previous models were firmly aimed at buyers on a budget, this one has image quality and features to vie with the best from the big household names in the camcorder business. Yet it’s still very reasonably priced. In fact, at under £500 the VP-HMX20 is one of the cheapest models in its class. So it’s a real contender on every level.” Link.
