Panasonic SDR-SW20 Reviews
Camcorderinfo reviews the Panasonic SDR-SW20 and gives their first impressions: “Over the years, the tide has washed many camcorders ashore. Many of them deserve to be tossed back into the water due to poor imaging, limited manual controls, or inadequate design. The SDR-SW20 would be one of the many to walk the plank, but we have to cut it some slack. This is Panasonic’s first attempt at underwater video. The company has hit home on a couple of crucial traits that make the SDR-SW20 worthwhile for those who are going to take advantage of its unique features. It’s rugged, shock and dust-proof body and waterproof to five feet. Is this the all-in-one camcorder for ballgames and birthday parties? No. Is this the camcorder for people who travel to the islands twice a year for snorkeling? Yes, perhaps.” Link.
CEN reviews the Panasonic SDR-SW20 and writes, “Camcorders that will work in hostile places can tend to be very expensive. Sun, snow, dust, rain and humidity can all affect the ability to shoot by varying degrees, and the protection that needs to be afforded in the form of specialized housings can be the equivalent of a deposit on a small Porsche…The Panasonic SDR SW20 does not pretend to be a full blast underwater camera; at a maximum rated depth of 1.5 metres, this is way out of the range a dedicated SCUBA diver wants or needs. But for the shooter who wants a go-anywhere, small and tough camcorder that takes great footage (although only MPEG-4 based), it is just the goods.” Link.
Australian PC World reviews the Panasonic SDR-SW20 and writes, “In addition to being a certified water-baby, the SDR-SW20 is also dust and shock-proof, with the durable resin chassis absorbing heavy knocks. The rugged design also protects against drops of up to 5 feet, which is sure to become a frequent blessing due to the missing hand strap (provided you’re not built like Goliath, that is)…Considering this is the first time Panasonic has wet its toes in the underwater camcorder market, the SDR-SW20 is a fairly solid offering. While it gets the job done underwater, on land it’s left slightly floundering. All up, an adequate effort. Link.
Trusted Reviews has a review of the Panasonic SDR-SW20 and writes, “The SDR-SW20 has few competitors. In fact, its main opposition will be a regular camcorder with a waterproof casing accessory, which is unlikely to be as small and convenient. Even FlipVideo’s Ultra is around the same size with its watertight attachment, albeit lighter. So this is a unique product. Its image quality is far from perfect, particularly in low light, but at under £250 the SDR-SW20 could even be considered as a second camcorder for more adventurous shoots. It’s great value, and we hope Panasonic also considers one of its more high-end models for the tough treatment - a waterproof HDC-SD9 would be pretty awesome.” Link.
CNET UK reviews the Panasonic SDR-SW20 and writes, “The novelty of waterproof gadgets takes a long time to wear off and we’ll never tire of drop-testing products. The Panasonic SDR-SW20 certainly has the fun factor, looks great and is highly affordable. But this cheery toughness comes at a price in terms of image quality, and besides, it’s still not robust enough for more extreme pursuits like scuba diving. If you’re happy to stick to the shallow end, the SW20 does the job…If you the only thing you’re planning to wet is your whistle, you could pay a similar amount of money for the similar-sized Samsung VP-HMX10.” Link.
CNET reviews the Panasonic SDR-SW20 and writes, “The concept for the Panasonic SDR-SW20 is sound: a small, lightweight flash-based camcorder that can withstand weather, water, dust, and drops. But if you have to sacrifice so much of the video quality to get it and pay extra for the privilege, I’m not sure it’s worth it. Especially when options like the sturdier, less expensive Olympus 1030 SW point-and-shoot camera and the similarly priced Sanyo Xacti VPC-E1 exist.” Link.
