Panasonic HDC-HS9 Reviews

Trusted Reviews has a review of the Panasonic HDC-HS9 and writes, “We forgave the HDC-SD9’s lack of hobbyist features, because its tiny size and reasonable price will make you much more likely to keep it with you at all times. Although the HDC-HS9 has almost the same features, plus a 60GB hard disk, it’s more normally proportioned and around £200 more expensive. Having Full HD video quality linked to a healthy video storage capacity will also leave many disappointed at the lack of a lens ring and the fact you can’t hook up a third-party microphone. The HDC-HS9 is still a great camcorder, and reportedly selling like hot cakes in Japan. But it would be even better with a few more enthusiast features, particularly for the money.” Link.

Camcorderinfo reviews the Panasonic HDC-HS9 and writes, “n the camcorder world, less is not always more. Ah, we grow misty-eyed reflecting on the glorious days when MiniDV giants roamed the Earth – focus rings, every port you could ask for, external Aperture and Shutter Speed buttons, killer handling, and more. Today, the market is flooded with ultra compact HD models that certainly look flashy, but lack the efficacy of a fully-stocked camcorder. The Panasonic HDC-HS9 ($1,099 MSRP) is among the most compact AVCHD camcorders in its class, but that’s about the best it can claim. The chief competitors, the Sony HDR-SR12 and Canon HF10, offer better image quality, more features, and better handling…The bottom line is there’s just nothing exciting about this camcorder. Unless Panasonic gets its act together soon, the future of its camcorder dynasty could be up a creek without a paddle. Now is the time to dust off those old MiniDV blueprints from the past for inspiration, Panasonic. The competition is just too fierce. Focusing on compact size instead of a quality user experience is a losing battle.” Link.

Good Gear Guide reviews the Panasonic HDC-HS9 and writes, “For your audio requirements, the HS9 comes equipped with a 5.1 channel sound system which can be downgraded to Dolby Digital 2-channel stereo if your system doesn’t support surround sound. Unfortunately, the HS9 lacks an external microphone port or headphone jack, which will limit your abilities to record crystal clear audio. This is a common omission in consumer-level camcorders, yet we still think that it’s something Panasonic could have squeezed in…(The Samsung VP-HMX10 (XSA), for example, managed to include this option despite being almost $800 cheaper.) Thankfully, the inbuilt microphone does a good job of capturing quality audio; provided you aren’t filming on an excessively windy day.” Link.

Australian PC World reviews the Panasonic HDC-SD9 and writes, “When it comes to releasing new hardware, Panasonic certainly isn’t a company to rest on its laurels. Early in 2007 it unveiled the world’s first high-definition SD/SDHC camcorder (the HDC-SD1); a model that was superseded less than six months later by the HDC-SD5. Now, barely a year since the technology first made its appearance, the prolific manufacturer is aiming for a blistering hat trick with yet another SDHC model – the HDC-SD9. While it remains a fairly nominal upgrade, the HDC-SD9 does benefit from a host of significant improvements, making it a punctual yet worthy successor…So what’s new about the HDC-SD9 to justify its (arguably premature) existence? To be honest, when we first got our hands on the unit we were plagued with a vivid sense of deja vu. In terms of appearance and components, it feels almost identical to its predecessor, sporting the same trio of 1/6-inch CCD sensors, 10x optical zoom lens, AVCHD video codec and 1920×1080 pixel resolution.” Link.

CNET Australia reviews the Panasonic HDC-HS9 and writes, “According to Panasonic’s estimates, the 60GB hard-disk should be good for 460 minutes of maximum quality 1920×1080 footage, or 1,380 minutes of low quality 1440×1080 video. Battery life is more likely to be an issue, with the standard battery rated at between 60 and 100 minutes of recording on a full charge. The use of an external battery charger — instead of charging the battery in the camera — is good news if you’re going to invest in extra, longer-lasting batteries…With an asking price of AU$1,999, the HS9 is in line with Sony’s HDR-SR11. While it’s not a bad camera by any stretch of the imagination, it has fewer features and lacks the Sony’s quality feel. Most importantly though, its video quality doesn’t quite have the same zing. Unless you can find a killer deal on the Panasonic, we’d plump for one of the SR11 or SR12 any time.” Link.

Digital Trends reviews the Panasonic HDC-HS9 and writes, “Hi-def camcorders are shrinking so rapidly, they make singer Amy Winehouse seem positively plump. A great example is the new Panasonic HDC-HS9, a combination 60GB hard disk drive, SDHC AVCHD home video maker that weighs 15.8 ounces including the battery. In fact, it’s barely bigger than your palm. This is an amazing technological feat—up to 7 hours and 40 minutes of real-time Full HD recording in a package measuring 3 x 2.9 x 5 (WHD, in inches). Small and compact is all well and good but how did this new camcorder perform against some decidedly bigger competition?..Although all of these camcorders use the AVCHD format to record 1080I video, Panasonic’s quality doesn’t compare to the other models. It’s definitely not worth the money ($999 list, $750 real world) and you should seriously look elsewhere if you want a new high-def home video maker. I know the 60GB Sony HDR-SR11 costs $400 more but the quality is so much better it’s worth every penny. If Panasonic doesn’t rethink the way it designs its AVCHD camcorders, it will become irrelevant as Sony, Canon and JVC walk away with the prize—and consumers’ dollars.” Link.

PC Authority reviews the Panasonic HDC-HS9 and writes, “The Panasonic took the top spot in our Labs this month by a clear margin, but it was a somewhat stealthy contender. Its plain looks do a good job of hiding a great set of features and the ability to record extremely high-quality footage, proving the adage that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.” Link.

PC World reviews the Panasonic HDC-HS9 and writes, “Considering the string of top-notch video cameras that Panasonic developed over the past several years–including the HDC-SD1, the VDR-D310 and the SDR-H200–the HDC-HS9 rates as a disappointment. This camcorder’s mediocre image quality outweighs any other considerations and leaves little reason to recommend this AVCHD model.” Link.
