Kodak Zi6 Reviews

Demystifying Digital reviews the Kodak Zi6 and writes, “Who would’ve thought that the first company to take on the Flip Video pocket camcorders would be Kodak and that with the Zi6 they would do it so well? Though its not without its faults — HD video quality was far from what high-def should look like, particularly in low-light –the Zi6 is a great little mobile video camera with enough improvements over Flip’s line-up that it could be the break-out product Kodak has been hoping for. With a $179 price tag that puts it on par with the Flip Mino, expect Kodak to move a lot these snazzy little camcorders over the holiday season.” Link.

Laptop Mag reviews the Kodak Zi6 and writes, “We’ve seen Flip Video impostors (anyone remember the Creative Vado?), but Kodak’s Zi6 is the first pocket camcorder that gives Pure Digital a run for its money. It shoots 720p video at 60 frames per second, and unlike the Flip camcorders, it has an SD Card slot that can accommodate cards as large as 32GB and the Zi6 can snap still images (with a dedicated Macro mode, to boot)…The Kodak Zi6 is lightweight, easy to use, and takes smooth HD video and crisp Macro photos. And it holds SD Cards, something the Flip Mino and Video Ultra don’t do—all this for $179, the same price as the Flip Mino. The Mino has a more streamlined design, but we’d rather carry and use the Kodak Zi6, despite the lack of built-in video-editing capabilities.” Link.

CNET reviews the Kodak Zi6 and writes, “Like many inexpensive competitors, the Kodak Zi6 is technically an HD camcorder the way a tomato is technically a fruit: it meets the definition, but doesn’t deliver the experience. True, the Zi6 records video in 1,280×720-pixel resolution at both 30 frames per second and 60fps–720p resolution–which technically qualifies it as an HD camcorder, but a lot of factors go into creating an image, not just a CMOS sensor capable of capturing an image at a certain resolution and frame rate. Still, the 720p video it does capture is a step up from the 640×480-pixel VGA resolution video you typically find on competing sub-$200 direct-to-YouTube camcorders from Flip Video, RCA, and Creative.” Link.

Pocket-lint reviews the Kodak Zi6 and writes, “There are distinct advantages to having separate batteries and a removable memory card. You can plug the card straight into your PC or perhaps even your TV and if you are doing a lot of filming, you can easily switch to a different card. Ditto the batteries - you are not tied to charging the internal battery, so if you are going on an extended vacation, you can easily buy additional AA batteries if you need them…So whilst the Zi6 appears to occupy the same space as the Flip and the Vado offerings, they really are quite different beasts because of the range of considerations for the different specs. On the whole though, as an alternative to a bulky camcorder, being able to slip this HD video device into your pocket is a very attractive prospect indeed.” Link.

Gizmodo reviews the Kodak Zi6 and writes, “Despite all the good stuff, there are a few shortcomings with the Zi6. Most importantly, when switching between infinite and macro focus, or from low-light to full-light, the camera takes a while to refocus. Quick panning was similarly out of focus, and looked jagged at times. While HD was good for size, the Zi6 isn’t recording at Blu-ray, or ever broadcast TV HD caliber. Truth is, the VGA should be sufficient for most videos. Finally, the USB connector popped open easily and often, a minor annoyance…The Zi6 is truly best in its class, though that class is still “cheap pocket camcorders.”" Link.

Switched Reviews the Kodak Zi6 and writes, “Size is a minor complaint, though, and we’re impressed with the image quality, large and crisp 2.4-inch screen and easy-to-use interface. After testing out the camcorder for a couple weeks, we recommend it as an excellent alternative to the much-hyped Flip, especially if you’re looking for HD capability. Actually, size aside, it’s quite simply the best of the bunch. The Zi6 will run you around $180 and is in stores now.” Link.

Camcorderinfo reviews the Kodak Zi6 and writes, “The Kodak Zi6 ($179 MSRP) is a decent camcorder. If you want something extremely small and cheap, but you insist on HD, you can buy it with confidence…Overall, the once or twice a year shooter who just wants a camcorder in their pocket on vacation will probably find the Zi6 a fine choice. It’s also not a bad option for high school or younger filmmakers who can’t afford (or be trusted) with a $1000 device. The Flip is still the simplest and smoothest to operate, but it’s certainly not the only kid on the block anymore.” Link.

CTV previews the Kodak Zi6 and writes, “The purpose of the Zi6 is to keep the camera simple in use and that means few recording options…My first set of videos made with the Zi6 are vibrant but the clarity and detail is quickly lost when simple issues such as camera shake seem to keep them from being recorded properly. In the coming weeks I’ll see what tricks are needed to improve upon that and we’ll see how well the clips can be edited and shared online for my final review.” Link.

IT Reviews has a review of the Kodak Zi6 and writes, “Kodak’s Zi6 is hardly awe-inspiring but it’s a decent pocket solution that’s very easy to use, so would suit beginners and those who don’t place high demands on image quality. It would benefit from a tripod for snapping photos but is capable of producing decent results and the accompanying software rounds off a tidy all-in-one solution for snapping and sharing media.” Link.

Macworld reviews the Kodak Zi6 and writes, “With the introduction of the Kodak Zi6, the pocket-sized camcorder market got a lot more interesting. At $180, it’s priced the same as the Flip Mino but is—with its potentially greater storage, removable battery, larger LCD, and HD capabilities—the better camera. If you’re in the market for an inexpensive camcorder and can deal with camera shake and unimpressive low-light shooting, this is the camera to have—today. Things are clearly heating up in this market and it will be interesting to see Pure Digital Technologies’ response.” Link.

Camcorderinfo reviews the Kodak Zi6 and writes, “Overall, the once or twice a year shooter who just wants a camcorder in their pocket on vacation will probably find the Zi6 a fine choice. It’s also not a bad option for high school or younger filmmakers who can’t afford (or be trusted) with a $1000 device. The Flip is still the simplest and smoothest to operate, but it’s certainly not the only kid on the block anymore.” Link.

CNET UK reviews the Kodak Zi6 and writes, “When you factor in that you have to buy an additional memory card, the added cost puts it up against a whole other class of products, such as the Aiptek Go-HD, which offer features like higher resolution stills and optical zoom rather than digital zoom. Despite its problems, we generally liked the Zi6. The video is pretty good and plays at larger sizes than what Flip Video’s current lineup offers. With its big screen, support for removable memory and the ability to use AA batteries it all adds up to an attractive package.” Link.

Trusted Reviews has a review of the Kodak Zi6 and writes, “The Kodak Zi6 does up the ante for video quality amongst YouTube-oriented camcorders, at least in the majority of lighting conditions. But the question is, if you’re aiming at YouTube, do you need HD anyway?..For simple capturing of family moments, however, the Zi6 does a competent job. So if you’re not just shooting for YouTube, the extra resolution swings things in its favour over the competition, although video hobbyists need not apply.” Link.

Pocket-lint has a review of the Kodak Zi6 and writes, “The Zi6 delivers where the Flip and Vado flounder, giving you good quality video in a compact form. This is also our biggest criticism of the Zi6: HD video processing puts much greater demands on your PC and this is true of moving, saving, converting and even viewing the files. However, PCs will become better at coping with these demands and the future will be better equipped for sharing HD files as broadband speeds increase and so on.” Link.
