JVC Everio GZ-MS100 You-Tube Camcorder Reviews

CamcorderInfo has a hands-on review of the JVC Everio GZ-MS100 and writes, “he 35x optical zoom far exceeds than Sony’s 4x and the Flip’s complete lack of optical zoom. The Everio GZ-MS100 has a horizontal design, rather than the upright design of the Flip and the Sony NSC-GC1. It’s pocket-sized (for a large pocket), and extremely light. The camcorder includes JVC’s new “Laser Touch Operation,” a hybrid touch sensitive strip along the left side of the LCD screen. It works fairly well and doesn’t grease up the screen like Sony camcorders…The camcorder records directly to SD memory cards, which load from the bottom. A 2GB card stores about 29 minutes of video in the highest quality. Video is encoded in a 720 x 480 MPEG-2 format, similar to other standard definition Everio camcorders. In fact, most of the innards of GZ-MS100 are similar to entry-level Everios. It features a 1/6-inch CCD with a gross pixel count of 680,000.” Link.

CrunchGear reviews the JVC Everio GZ-MS100 and writes, “This camera would be great for…drumroll please…people who are somewhat technically inclined, don’t need to edit their videos, and want to get them uploaded as quickly as possible. My fellow technology bloggers come to mind. I can picture myself using this at an event to record a keynote address and then zipping it up to YouTube immediately so that I can get it up on CrunchGear as in short order…Unfortunately, the tech blogger sector’s probably not going to be a big enough market for JVC. But the relatively cumbersome YouTube feature will leave neophytes in the dark while the equally cumbersome editing process (you have to re-encode all your files just to get them to work with most video editing software) will leave people who want to edit their videos with their own software wondering why they have to jump through so many hoops when it should be a simple process: take the SD card out of the camera and into the computer, open files in the video editor.” Link.

Digital Trends reviews the JVC Everio GZ-MS100 and writes, “So this boils down to a decent, lightweight standard-def 35x zoom camcorder with software that makes uploading to YouTube relatively simple. There are many other less expensive gadgets that let you post to YouTube but quality is pretty weak…At least with the JVC Everio S GZ-MS100 you’re getting a camcorder rather than a glorified disposable camera. Since this baby is brand new (as of June 2008) the price hasn’t dipped below $349 USD. If you want a pretty cool gadget and the world to share your pratfalls, by all means go for it!” Link.

Camcorderifo reviews the JVC Everio GX-MS100 and writes, “The JVC Everio GZ-MS100 (Review, Specs, Recent News, ) is a decent entry-level camcorder, but the two flashiest and most compelling features - the YouTube compatibility and the “Laser Touch” operation - are the very elements that weaken it. The YouTube upload process is not as simple, elegant, or effective as the Pure Digltal Flip Ultra (Specs, Recent News, $149.99) or other Flips. It requires installing the software ahead of time (barring on-the-go uploading) and offers PC-only support…Overall, the Everio GZ-MS100 is going to appeal to consumers looking for a bargain in the compact class. If finding the simplest solution to YouTube is your goal, look elsewhere. The Pure Digital Flip Ultra (Specs, Recent News, $149.99) is probably your best bet, video quality notwithstanding.” Link.

TechCentral reviews the JVC Everio GZ-MS100 and writes, ” Overall, the MS100 has its fair share of hits and misses. For instance, its ergonomic design and size makes it really easy to operate the camcorder with one hand…Also, once you learn to use the software it is really easy to upload videos to YouTube. However, the MS100 is seriously not made for shooting still images. And the Laser Touch doesn’t make it any easier to access the camcorder’s functions…These issues aside, the camcorder was fun to use and the videos turned out good overall.” Link.

Wired reviews the JVC Everio-MS100 and writes, “While it’s nicely appointed, you’ve got to bridle at a couple things. First, there’s no optical image stabilization. Without it, you’ve got to have a steady hand or most of your footage is going look like a glitchy glob, particularly at the far end of the zoom range. Shaky image stabilization aside, the very nature of this camcorder calls into question its usefulness. While neither big nor expensive, there are other, better, ultra-simple run-and-gun camcorders out there. Most are smaller and cheaper too…With this form factor at this price the MS100 is kind of stuck in the middle between the svelte flash-based AVCHD camcorders and the shirt pocket shooters from Flip, Kodak and Creative. If you’re going to go with this bigger, more traditional camcorder design you want high def and optical image stabilization which you can get for a couple hundred dollars more.” Link.

Computer Active reviews the JVC Everio GZ-MS100 and writes, “Picture quality is reasonable, although the colour balance was a bit off to begin with and required tweaking. Quality is likewise fair – it can be a little fuzzy around the edges of objects, but it’s good enough for most shooting…There’s an excellent 35x zoom lens that allows you to get right into the action (although camera shake becomes a problem at long zooms, despite the image stabilisation of the camcorder)…It can upload easily to Youtube using a dedicated button and the menus are easy to navigate thanks to the touch-sensitive panel and good screen, which are nice additions to a good camera.” Link.

Trusted Reviews has a review of the JVC Everio GZ-MS100 and writes, “Compared to the built-in software of the Vado and Flip Video Ultra, the JVC Everio GZ-MS100’s YouTube connectivity is much more of a gimmick. Most regular camcorders could provide almost the same functionality with a copy of Roxio Buzz. But that doesn’t stop it being a decent little camcorder for the money. Its video quality beats other YouTube oriented models hands down, and even gives other similarly-priced models a run for their money. But JVC’s own Everio GZ-MG330 is almost the same price, offers identical image quality, yet comes with a 30GB hard disk on board. So unless you need the lightness of the SD memory format and One Touch YouTube abilities, the heavier MG330 is better value.” Link.

The Washingtonpost reviews the JVC Everio GZ-MS100 and writes, “The overall video performance makes it far outshine the rudimentary point-and-shoot camcorders like the Flip, the Small Wonder, and the Creative Vado. But what these ultra-compact camcorders lack in performance, they make up for with portability, cheap prices, and ease of use. The MS100’s video might look better, but it isn’t nearly as idiot-proof and it doesn’t really fit in your pocket. If you’re looking for the easiest possible video experience, you can’t beat the Flip’s minimalist controls and seamless YouTube uploading. But if you’re willing to pay a little more for something with decent video quality and some manual options, the Everio GZ-MS100 is a potential compromise…For those looking at the Everio GZ-MS100, you’ll have to ask yourself if the price is worth it for the higher quality video. After enjoying the Flip’s interface, it’s frustrating to wrestle with the MS100’s menus and the inelegant journey from camcorder to YouTube. If you’re looking for a simple, inexpensive option to give you better video and more manual controls, it might be worth trying out the Canon and Panasonic alternatives before settling on this model from JVC.” Link.

CNET Australia reviews the JVC Everio GZ-MS100 and writes, “The JVC Everio GZ-MS100 should satisfy a majority of budget-conscious users who want a simple and small flash memory-card-based camcorder in a traditional horizontal chassis for getting videos up on the web. Those who intend to view video on a TV or even full screen on a computer monitor will not be happy with this model though.” Link.

CNET UK reviews the JVC Everio GZ-MS100 and writes, “The JVC Everio GZ-MS100 should satisfy a majority of budget-conscious users who want a small flash memory-card-based camcorder that’s simple and can upload videos easily to the Web. People who intend to view video on a TV or even in full-screen mode on a computer monitor will not be happy with this model, however.” Link.
