Creative Vado Reviews
Laptop Mag reviews the Creative Vado and writes, “It doesn’t take a camcorder expert to see that the new Vado pocket-sized camcorder from Creative ($99 for 2GB) is strikingly similar to the wildly popular Pure Digital Flip Camcorder (Ultra Series) ($149 for 2GB). Though Flip is rumored to be coming out with a new, smaller “mino” version of its camera, we couldn’t wait to put the older Flip Ultra up against its newest and fiercest rival…Laptop Mag reviews the Creative Vado and writes, “The Vado won more rounds of this fight, including specs and design, but when it comes to shooting video, the Vado must bow to the older, more experienced Flip Video Ultra. We were impressed with the Vado’s sleek design, small form factor, larger LCD and $99 price point ($50 less than the Flip Ultra), but the Flip is the pocket camcorder we would choose to record our memories–even if we did have to shell out a few more bucks.”

PCMag reviews the Creative Vado and writes, “The device’s unprecedented success ushered in a new class of gadget: the YouTube camcorder. The extremely familiar form factor suggests that Creative got its inspiration for the Vado Pocket Video Cam from Pure Digital. In the process, the company designed a camcorder that improves upon the Flip Ultra in a number of ways but still falls short in a few key areas…In terms of price, the Creative Vado Pocket Video Cam seems to hit the sweet spot, at $99, compared with $150 for the equivalent Flip. Its slim and slick design, rechargeable battery, and larger screen are certainly big wins when placed up against its relatively clunky competitor. The quality of uploaded videos is the device’s one major flaw, but for many consumers it will certainly be an important one, even at such an enticing price point.” Link.
CNET UK reviews the Creative Vado and writes, “Missing frills and features aside, the real question is whether the Vado matches up to the Flip Video models in terms of video quality. The answer is: not quite. The Vado performs well enough — the video certainly meets our minimum criteria for Web-only video — but the Flip Video Ultra’s footage looks sharper, the exposures brighter and the colours more vibrant. Also, low-light performance on the Flip is significantly better. Finally, the mic on the Flip seems a little more sensitive…In the final analysis, Creative has done a nice job with its first entry into the straight-to-Web mini camcorder market. The small chassis and inclusion of a rechargeable battery are big pluses, and the ultralow price tag keeps it from competing with decent point-and-shoot cameras. But if you want better video quality and more robust software features in the box, so to speak, the Flip Video Ultra or Mino are better choices for your straight-to-Web video.” Link.
Trusted Reviews has a review of the Creative Vado and writes, “Despite the online video revolution, interest in editing footage hasn’t exactly snowballed. The vast majority of YouTube users simply shoot something and put it straight up on the Web. Camcorder manufacturers have started to realise this, and are busy launching diminutive point-and-shoot models, such as Panasonic’s SDR-S7, Canon’s FS11, and Toshiba’s Camileo Pro HD. But the traditional names in consumer electronics aren’t the only ones hoping to take advantage of the online video revolution. New to the market is Creative with its Vado Pocket Video Cam. It’s slim, it’s keenly priced, and it has a unique trick up its sleeve…The Vado is not really a device for anyone who wants to do more with their video than just upload it to YouTube. Its camcorder features are virtually non-existent, and decent lighting is required to obtain acceptable image quality. But it still manages to achieve its goal. The built-in USB 2.0 plug and integrated software mean you can shoot, and then use any Internet-connected Windows PC to upload to the Web literally minutes afterwards. So if that’s what you want to do with your video, the Vado’s £79 price tag seems rather good value.” Link.
Pocket-lint reviews the Creative Vado and writes, “There are problems with moving from dark to light conditions and it takes a while for the Vado to adjust itself, so worth considering whilst you are out and about to avoid a complete whiteout. You’ll also find that hand movement can cause a great deal of noise to be picked up through the mic. Whilst the 2x zoom appears to be silent, there is a chance that using the button will in introduce noise, but otherwise it appeared to be pretty good…On balance though, considering we are looking at pocketable video cameras, there is little between the Flip and the Vado, certainly, both suffer under tough conditions as you’d expect. The Vado doesn’t seem to suffer from the audio artefacts we found on the Flip, so perhaps steps ahead in quality.” Link.
The Washingtonpost reviews the Creative Vado and writes, “In name recognition and sales, Pure Digital’s Flip Video devices are as dominant in the YouTube-friendly pocket-camcorder world as the iPod is among audio players. But on paper, Creative’s Vado Pocket Video Cam trumps the Flip models on several counts: It’s thinner and cheaper, and it holds more footage…Despite the Vado’s drawbacks, it’s a really well-priced device that’s good for capturing off-the-cuff video clips. If video quality is important to you, opt for the Flip Mino. If you want to save $80, Creative’s pocket camcorder is a serviceable alternative.” Link.
Computer Active reviews the Creative Vado and writes, “The Creative Vado differs from conventional digital camcorders in that it doesn’t use tapes or discs…Instead, up to two hours of video can be saved to its internal memory. It also looks more like an old iPod than a video camera, a design that makes it easy to carry in a pocket…Computer Active reviews the Creative Vado and writes, “As a fun way to shoot decent quality video while out and about, the Vado is a good choice. However, if you are looking to record a whole holiday’s worth of video or if you want archive-quality video you’ll be left wanting more than the Vado can offer.” Link.
PC World reviews the Creative Vado and writes, “I have another beef with the A/V-out jack on the top of the Vado. Though it’s a nice touch, Creative doesn’t include the required cable with the device. The cable is sold separately, of course, but information about it was hard to find on the company’s Web site. A headphone jack would have been much more useful; the audio recorded on the device is decent, but gauging how well the camcorder is picking up audio is difficult without listening to it through headphones…Despite the Vado’s drawbacks, it’s a really well-priced device that’s good for capturing off-the-cuff video clips. If video quality is important to you, opt for the Flip Mino. If you want to save $80, Creative’s pocket camcorder is a serviceable alternative.” Link.
Good Gear Guide reviews the Creative Vado and writes, “Anyone who has used a camera phone before will be at home with the Vado — simply point the device at your subject and press record. There are no fiddly controls to master, with the simplistic directional pad doubling as a 2x digital zoom. This is pretty much the only control on offer. In terms of image quality, the most charitable thing to be said of the Vado is that you get what you pay for. Don’t even think about screening your footage on a widescreen TV: the results may scar and terrify you. This is strictly designed for video podcasts and playback on small, portable devices.” Link.
Camcorderinfo reviews the Creative Vado and writes, “In the case of the Creative Vado (MSRP $99.99), most consumers are probably trying to choose between it and its nearer competitors, like the Flip series from Pure Digital, the RCA Small Wonder, and the new Kodak Zi6. Of those listed, the Vado is certainly the cheapest. It’s no surprise that Creative cut some corners in order to offer that $100 price point ($80 less than the Flip Mino (Specs, Recent News, $149.50) or Kodak Zi6). Unfortunately, cutting those corners often meant delivering an inferior product. Yes, the construction is cheaper—on our Vado, the AV port was unreliable and the tripod mount snapped right off—but it’s more than that. Just how much does $80 buy you? With the Flip Mino, you also get much better-looking video, better audio, built-in editing software, higher quality construction, plus a wrist strap, a carrying pouch, and an AV cable (for use in the fully functioning and reliable AV port). Eventually, the $80 price difference isn’t a good enough excuse. The Flip is a better buy in every regard.” Link.
Switched reviews the Creative Vado and writes, “If either discretion or portability is of the utmost importance, then this is the only camera that’ll come in handy, since you’ll barely notice it in your pocket. And that big screen is really nice for anyone who has to strain their eyes to see small stuff. Plus, you can’t beat the sub-$100 price tag. But if video quality is the most important thing to you, you might want to shell out the extra $50 for the Flip (or a few Benjamins extra for a high-quality camcorder cell-phone like the Nokia N95).” Link.
