CNET reviews the Canon Vixia HF100 and writes, “An excellent choice for flash-based HD recording, the HF10 gives the CX7 a close run for the money, and it is a clear champion if you don’t like the Sony’s touch-screen interface. But then the real question becomes which model is the better deal–the Vixia HF10 or the HF100. The cost difference between the two exactly reflects the current price of 16GB of flash memory, which makes it tempting to recommend buying the cheaper model and springing for an additional card when the prices inevitably fall (or paying the same for a larger card, when they inevitably ship) later in the year. On the other hand, the HF10’s black body is so much more attractive than the HF100’s silver. Decisions, decisions.” Link.
CamcorderInfo reviews the Canon Vixia HF100 and writes, “The Canon HF100 ($899 MSRP) is a solid performer with great manual controls and the ease of use that beginners crave. However, it may not be the most economical choice for most consumers. The camcorder only records to SD and SDHC memory cards. Now, don’t get us wrong. Flash memory is clearly going to be the media of the future, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best choice today. First of all, there is no memory card in the box when you buy the HF100. You’ll need to budget that extra expense in yourself. While memory cards are cheap, they’re not nearly as cheap as tapes and DVDs. A miniDV tape can hold 60 minutes of video and only costs about $5. To fit the same 60 minutes on an SDHC card, you’ll need 8GB of storage, which costs a minimum of $30. Now imagine planning for a 10–day trip to the Outback. Do you want to buy five miniDV tapes or five SDHC cards?” Link.
SimplyDV reviews the Canon Vixia HF100 and writes, “Whilst it’s fair to say that a great many users will have no interest in connecting an external microphone (either via the 3.5mm jack or on the intelligent accessory shoe) or even headphones (actually very useful as a means of checking wind-impact on the built-in mic even if monitoring with iPod-style earbuds),.. it’s also worth noting that there will be many other users for whom the inclusion of these features will make the solid-state HF100 a very attractive proposition indeed, and for that Canon has to be congratulated in coming up with such an excellent pair of products…There are only two words to describe the Canon HF100 - absolutely fabulous!” Link.

Ok, the HF10 can add a 16GB card and give you four hours of shooting in FXP - comparable to a hard disk-based model - whilst the HF100 will need an extra memory card to perform the same feat. But that’s hardly a major hassle, and for this reason the HF100 usurps the higher-end HF10 as our top AVCHD camcorder choice.” Link.
