Canon Vixia HF10 Reviews
CNET reviews the Canon Vixia HF10 and writes, “An excellent choice for flash-based HD recording, the HF10 gives the CX7 a close run for the money, and it is a clear champion if you don’t like the Sony’s touch-screen interface. But then the real question becomes which model is the better deal–the Vixia HF10 or the HF100. The cost difference between the two exactly reflects the current price of 16GB of flash memory, which makes it tempting to recommend buying the cheaper model and springing for an additional card when the prices inevitably fall (or paying the same for a larger card, when they inevitably ship) later in the year. On the other hand, the HF10’s black body is so much more attractive than the HF100’s silver. Decisions, decisions.” Link.
CEN does a first look review of the Canon Vixia HF10 and writes, “The HF10 is an interesting player in Canon’s lineup and in my opinion represents the future of where digital camcorders are going. Forget DVD or hard disk camcorders. Video tape is an annoyance compared to what you get with 16GB of built in memory and say a 16GB Kingston SDHC memory card…That is 32GB of storage space. Or just under two hours of HD video in FXP mode, a bit more than 2.5 hours in XP+ mode, about 4.5 hours in SP mode, and more than 5.5 hours in LP mode. Now if only the battery could keep up with what the camera can capture in say SP mode, all would be rosy. But that is what large capacity batteries are purchased for. In all the HF10 is a very easy camera to use and it captures high quality video and still images.” Link.
Digital Trends reviews the Canaon Vixia HF10 and writes, “When I took the HF10 out of the box, I was pleasantly surprised just how small and attractive it was. Much more compact than even the JVC HD6, it owes its svelte style to the fact there’s only a sliver of flash memory and a card slot for saving videos and stills. Friends, just like the iPod and music, solid-state camcorders will take over from tapes and discs in the years ahead. It’s just a fact of life—not as much fun as the birds and bees but still enjoyable…I really liked using the HF10, once getting the hang of the menu system. Focusing was fast and crisp, ergonomics are terrific and it did an excellent job handling scenes taken outdoors. Unfortunately, like the JVC, it made wind sound like the exhaust of a jet engine, even with the noise reduction engaged. And this camcorder wasn’t as good in available light as the JVC, a recent Editor’s Choice pick. Good, not great is the bottom line for this one.” Link.
CNET UK reviews the Canon Vixia HF10 and writes, “Canon may not have been first out of the gate with a flash-based camcorder — or second, or third — but its debut model, the £700 high-definition HF10, gets it right the first time. A sleek black compact model with a well-rounded feature set, great video and excellent performance, the HF10 definitely deserves a spot on your short list of potential home-movie camcorders…The HF10 is an excellent choice for flash-based HD recording. But then the real question becomes which model is the better deal — the HF10 or the HF100. The cost difference between the two closely reflects current pricing of 16GB of flash memory, which makes it tempting to recommend buying the cheaper model and springing for an additional card when the prices inevitably fall. Alternatively, you could pay the same for a larger card, when they inevitably ship later in the year. On the other hand, the HF10’s black body is so much more attractive than the HF100’s silver. Decisions, decisions.” Link.
IT Reviews the Canon Vixia HF10 and writes, “While we applaud the proliferation of inputs and outputs (headphones, microphone, HDMI, USB, component), the new Mini Advanced Accessory Shoe has of necessity meant a reduction in size of 50 percent, so standard fittings won’t apply…However, when it comes to seeing the results of the footage you’ve shot on playback, you should be delighted with the sharpness and clarity of the images and the authenticity of colour and contrast. While the days of the MiniDV are far from numbered, the HR10 has proved that Flash can now be recognised as a serious rival. Link.
Unbeatable reviews the Canon Vixia HF10 and writes, “The first thing we notice about the Canon HF10 is how comfortable it sits in your hand with all the necessary controls in all the right places. Its a joy to hold and feels great. It records just over 2 hours of AVCHD video at a maximum of 17 Mbps or upto 6 hours at 5Mbps. Images were extremely impressive and the optical image stabilisation did its job superbly as images were sharp and clear and had no sign of blur or camera shake. Battery life was good and we managed to squeeze a good hour from the battery included which was good at high quality…We really liked the canon HF10 HD Camcorder and were more than pleased with the results it provided. Images were amazing and the usability was very good too. Canon have done well once again in creating a well performing and highly specified, but still easy to use camcorder.” Link.
Digital Arts reviews the Canon Vixia HF10 and writes, “Canon’s HF10 is a high-definition camcorder with a 16GB internal flash drive, plus an SD card slot. In our testing, the HF10 shot impressive, brilliant video, up to par with its similar MiniDV counterpart, Canon’s HV30. The HF10 has its flaws and it’s certainly no fully pro-level camcorder, but it’s a fine choice for less demanding work, particularly if you’re eager to leave MiniDV tape behind…The HF10’s impressive video quality and ease of use add up to a very good camcorder, especially given its size. If size matters for you, the HF10 is the right tapeless camcorder; if size doesn’t matter, another good choice is Sony’s HDR-SR11.” Link.
CNET Australia reviews the Canon Vixia HF10 and writes, “Though the HF10 incorporates a smaller, 7.9mm 3.3-megapixel CMOS sensor than the HV30 and the CX7, the video still looks quite good: properly exposed, nicely saturated, and sharp. As expected, in low light the video displays more noise and a somewhat compressed tonal range, but retains a significant amount of detail and fares above average compared with the rest of its class…An excellent choice for flash-based HD recording, the HF10 gives the CX7 a close run for the money, and it is a clear champion if you don’t like the Sony’s touch-screen interface.” Link.
PC Authority reviews the Canon Vixia HF10 and writes, “Despite the excellent quality, convenient 16GB internal flash storage and comfortable ergonomics, the HF10 can’t quite match our best camcorder on test this month. The Panasonic HDC-HS9 has more features, better image quality and is worth the $34 price difference.” Link.
PC World reviews the Canon Vixia HF10 and writes, “The Canon Vixia HF10 isn’t perfect, but its balance of benefits and shortcomings tilts heavily toward benefits, helping it to a third-place finish on our comparison chart. The Sony Handycam HDR-SR12 beats this model on image quality, but the Canon Vixia HF10 gives you more options for the look of your video. At this point, however, that says more about the promise of the HF10’s higher-bit-rate successors than about the HF10 itself.” Link.
