Video camera trends are shifting quickly from traditional recording mediums such as tape-types to DVD and HDD types, or silicon media such as SD cards (semiconductor memory).
In the midst of these shifting trends, SD Memory card type “Silicon movie cameras” such as the Xacti are advantageous in that they are smaller and lighter, as the playback and recording mechanisms and mechanical driving parts are not necessary any longer.
Hereafter, through the expansion of media capacity as well as the progress towards price-reduction, there is an expected expanding trend of “Silicon movie type-cameras”, with Japan’s domestic market expecting approximately 300,000 camera sales for Fiscal Year 2006, and seeing that number rise to approximately double that amount, with 720,000 cameras forecast to be sold in Fiscal Year 2010 (according to internal market forecasts).
Responding to consumer demand*5, SANYO started selling the DMX-CA6 camera series from August 2006, a camera which introduced a splash-proof design*6 for people with active lifestyles. The CA6 enabled pocket-sized digital movie cameras to go where cameras of that type had not gone before, allowing the camera to be exposed to water drops or spray and take high quality pictures and movies.
The DMX-CA65 takes the splash-proof concept to the next level, allowing those with active lifestyles to bring the camera both into and under the water*3 and take high quality pictures and movies.
*4 According to company surveys
*5 For JIS IPX4 (previously JIS Grade 4) of water resistance
Detailed Explanation
Main Features
1. World’s first*1 waterproof*2 digital movie camera also capable of recording under water*3
Until now, video cameras have required extra care and attention when used near water or on rainy days, from the fear and insecurity of situations which might cause the camera to become wet due to water drops, the camera getting sprayed or splashed, or even worse, full submersion and completely losing the use of the camera.
The DMX-CA65 lays all these fears to rest as it becomes the world’s first*1 waterproof*2 pocket-sized movie camera. Without concern for water spray, snowflakes, or water drops, the camera can be close to the action and record the enthusiasm and adventures of people with water-related active lifestyles. The camera can even be used in more unusual situations, such as while submersed to film underwater*3, for example, during marine sports including surfing and snorkeling, or winter sports where there may be water spray, such as skiing or snowboarding.*6
2. Adopts the leading MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 movie format for longer recording time or high quality images
The DMX-CA65 adopts the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format, based on ISO global standards. Through effective high-compression utilizing advanced image encoding technology, longer recording time is capable. In comparison with previous traditional MPEG-4 formats, the H.264 format is described as “having higher image quality for the same amount of recording time” and “having longer recording time for the same image quality as traditional the MPEG-4 format”. This mode was created for movies, and, depending on the situation, may be adjusted. If using a 4GB SDHC memory card, approximately 5 hours recording time may be taken*7.
Additionally, the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, because it is a leading format expanding through video-delivery services on the internet that are quickly spreading, the movies taken can be uploaded to blogs with ease. If the camera used is a Xacti, then it will be easy to make the transition from the traditional movie-taking style of keeping movies on the shelf, to the new style of sharing movies with others quickly and easily.
In order to allow easy of use of the movies and pictures taken with the camera on the computer, the camera comes bundled with “Adobe Premier Elements 3.0″, software that enables the editing and creation of original DVDs, and “Adobe Photoshop Album SE”, enables simple management and viewing of photographs.
*7 In TV-HQ mode.
Regarding the agreement to distribute Adobe’s software with the Xacti camera, Garrett J. Ilg, president of Adobe Systems Japan, commented, “Adobe’s video editing software, ‘Adobe Premiere Elements’, through being bundled with SANYO’s new Xacti product, will provide users with new experience and benefit. The H.264 format which Adobe Premiere Elements is compatible with and that Xacti has adopted will hereafter become a mainstream. In cooperation with SANYO, Adobe Systems will continue to provide solutions enhancing users’ personal movie experiences by using Adobe Premiere Elements in combination with Xacti.”
3. Take beautiful, high quality photographs and movies
Through the high-speed image processing LSI “Pure Force Engine III”, movies can be filmed even in low-light conditions. When using the “Automatic” setting, subjects may be recorded in light as low as 7 lux, and when using the “Lamp Mode” setting found in the “Scene Select” function menu, the frame rate will be automatically adjusted, enabling subjects to be recorded in high quality, even 2 lux low-light environments. High-quality 6.0 Mega-pixel still images may be taken up to the highly sensitive ISO 1600 level. Still images may also be taken in scenes indoors or at night, in situations where a flash is not desirable, and still capture beautifully the natural colors and expressions. The camera is also equipped with an on-board Anti-shake Digital Image Stabilizer for movies*8, enabling high quality movies and images whether used the bright outdoors or dark indoors.
*8When shooting a movie in Digital Image Stabilizer mode, still images taken may differ in angle of view.
4.Other Features

Sanyo Xacti DMX-CA65 Reviews
PCPro has a review of the Sanyo Xacti CA65 and writes, “The Xacti is also waterproof: to depths of 1.5m for up to 60 minutes. This, coupled with the non-mechanical recording, makes it hardy enough for adrenalin junkies. The electronic image stabilisation is also extremely effective, even at the maximum optical zoom of 5x. Quality from the miniature optics is unmistakably digital, with colours mildly oversaturated and compression artefacts apparent, but the CA65 is more than good enough for recording video for the web.” Link.
Good Gear Guide reviews the Sanyo Xacti VPC-CA65 and writes, “Unfortunately, while Sanyo has made some improvements to the build quality of the camera, its control layout remains mostly unchecked. Like its predecessor, it is quite a tiny unit, resulting in equally tiny buttons. The controls, which sit on the back of the device and are accessed via the thumb, are crammed too closely together and are mounted very stiffly. This makes using the VPC-CA65 a trial for people with have large hands and can also prove difficult underwater, where visibility is limited…All up, the VPC-CA65 is a semi-decent performer for the asking price. While some significant flaws remain, it manages to improve on the VPC-CA6 in several key areas, making it a decent little option for those who require underwater video.” Link.
Stuff reviews the Sanyo Xacti VPC-CA65 and writes, “The Xacti VPC-CA65EXW is compact and easy to use with simple and clear buttons and menus; also, the 2.5-inch TFT LCD with 150,000 pixels and complete frame coverage is very viewable even in bright sunlight. This is good, because there’s no viewfinder on the Xacti VPC-CA65EXW, so you’re dependent on the LCD for shooting…While the fun-factor is high with the VPC-CA65EXW, it comes at a fairly steep price: $699 from The Warehouse isn’t cheap, even if the camera is waterproof. That said, Sanyo seems to have the waterproof SD handycam market pretty much cornered, so if that’s what you’re after, the VPC-CA65EXW might fit the bill.” Link.
IT Reviews has a review of the Sanyo Xacti VPC-CA65 and writes, “It’s not a natural thing to do, dipping a video camera underwater, so on the first couple of attempts it can be quite unnerving, especially as speaker holes are visible on the exterior of the camera. However, after the first successful attempt or two, it feels liberating not to be scared of getting the device wet, and dunking it becomes quite addictive. Of course, if you drop the camera off the end of a pier it’s not going to bob to the surface, so you still have to have some wits about you…The Sanyo VPC-CA65 is a compact and sturdy-feeling digital movie and stills camera that is reliable and easy to operate. Although the distinctive and original body shape feels a little uncomfortable and somewhat awkward to use with one hand only, once you get the hang of it you can capture both good quality photographs and videos quickly without the need to trudge through menu options. There’s no point in comparing the waterproof capabilities of this digital movie camera to any other product, as this is the only one of its kind at the moment - that alone is reason enough to snap it up. An ideal choice if you’re off on a beach holiday with your kids.” Link.
