Samsung SC-HMX10 Reviews

Camcorderinfo reviews the Samsung SC-HMX10 and writes, “You’re choice is this. Either sit on your money until the camcorder you’ve had your eye on is replaced and goes on sale, or settle for a Samsung. Chances are, if you’re like most people and are only using your camcorder a few times a year, you’ll like what you see from the SC-HMX10. The video is better than we expected, and the interface is very user friendly. However, a side-by-side with a full 1920 x 1080 Sony or Canon camcorder will have you crying in your beer with remorse, so prepare thyself.” Link.

Good Gear Guide reviews the Samsung SC-HMX10 and writes, “After a frankly ridiculous amount of procrastination, Samsung is finally set to release its first ever high-definition camcorder, the VP-HMX10. As implicated by its low price tag, the HMX10 is very much a budget-orientated high-def model aimed squarely at entry level users. As such, it will fail to satisfy discerning videophiles who demand the unparalleled image resolution and clarity of ‘full’ HD. Nevertheless, it remains a worthy option for people looking for a cheap way to upgrade their SD camera…When it comes to functionality, the VP-HMX10 is a bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand, we found the touch-screen menu to be well laid out and attractively presented, yet on the other, certain small icons proved to be stubbornly unresponsive. The camcorder also takes several seconds to switch between video, photo and playback modes, which is sure to grate over time (it also won’t let you capture still images while in video mode; even when you’re not actually recording video). Manual options are quite ample; including exposure, focus, white balance, shutter speed, tele macro and a selection of scene modes.” Link.

CNET UK reviews the Samsung VP-HMX10 and writes, “There are three versions of the HMX10; this VP-prefixed model lacks onboard memory, while there are other versions that come either with 4GB or 8GB onboard. The VP-HMX10 is available online now for around £350…While we have highlighted a fair few issues with the Samsung VP-HMX10, it’s an excellent camcorder if considered for what it is: an accessible, reasonably-priced shooter with the emphasis on usability and style. Image quality cannot compete with more expensive models, but this certainly gives other consumer HD models like the Panasonic HDC-SD5 a run for the money. It’s definitely superior to models like the Aiptek AHD200, but then the Aiptek is significantly cheaper.” Link.

CNET reviews the Samsung SC-HMX10 and writes, “The video quality is just mixed enough to disappoint. It’s surprisingly sharp, and the colors, while not terribly accurate, generally look saturated and pleasing. Though low resolution, still photos look OK. But the HMX10 generally renders inconsistent exposure across the frame, completely blown out highlights in sunlight, sallow skin tones outdoors, and mushy low-light video…The Samsung SC-HMX10 is an especially difficult camcorder to rate: for everything I like about it, I have a matching complaint. If it cost $200, I could probably overlook its issues, but it’s not cheap enough to merit that much forgiveness. After all is said and done, the fact remains that decent HD recording has not yet hit the bargain bin.” Link.

CNET Australia reviews the Samsung VP-HMX10 and writes, “Aside from the aforementioned issues with holding the camera and its awfully cheap hand-strap, using the HMX10 for actual shooting was a breeze. There’s a sensible mix of touchscreen and handheld controls, with the choice of a physical zoom either on the top of the camcorder, or on the side of the LCD panel. Touchscreen controls worked well, even with fairly stubby fingers working rapidly, and it was easy enough to adjust settings on the fly. Notably, there’s no night shooting mode on offer with the HMX10, which may deter some users, and there’s also something of a delay in switching modes between still/video/playback modes. Video quality was in the fair range for a consumer level camcorder, and we did notice a lot of picture quality problems when shooting in less than ideal light…Ultimately, the HMX10 is a real compromise camera. It’s not up there with the best of the true 1080p camcorders, and if you’re after something like that, the very similar Panasonic HDC-SD9 has the same size advantages — but then it costs almost twice as much as the street price we’ve seen for the HMX10. If 720p will fulfil your aspirations, and you can live without night shooting and with the very dodgy hand-strap, then the HMX10 is worthy of consideration, especially considering the relatively small price jump it commands over lesser SD camcorders.” Link.
