JVC GR-D796 Press Release
JVC continues to enhance the video capturing experience with its newest MiniDV camcorder line. The three-model line offers robust recording features, new easy-to-use controls and 35 percent longer recording time.
With their compact design and new 2.7-inch widescreen LCD monitor, the streamlined models provide easy portability. A 34x optical zoom lens on all models provides unprecedented shooting flexibility. For ease of use, a new stick controller mounted on the LCD monitor makes it easy to set menu and manual settings and control playback. Recording time is enhanced through the use of a new battery combined with new circuitry that consumes less power. All models also feature JVC’s Auto Illumi light for shooting in low light situations. Two of the three new models feature Dual Recording, allowing users to shoot digital still images while recording video.

Consumers can record over two hours of video before having to re-charge the battery thanks to a redesigned battery and lower power consumption. JVC GR-D796 Reviews
PCWorld has a review of the JVC GR-D796 and writes, “Unfortunately, in a cohort of five MiniDV camcorders that we tested at the same time, the GR-D796 received the lowest ratings for still-image and video quality from our panel of experts. Its unimpressive maximum resolution of 640 by 480 pixels undoubtedly contributed to the unit’s still-image quality rating of Poor. Noise and blurriness were prevalent throughout our test shots and colors were far from accurate. The GR-D796’s video quality was a little better, earning a rating of Good from our jury. Motion was a little rough and colors were dark, but the video overall was passable. Since the video from this camcorder appears to be a little raw and gritty, it’s suitable for projects that are made for Internet streaming or that don’t require high production values.” Link.
MacWorld reviews the JVC GR-D796 and writes, “The GR-D796 is a humble point-and-shoot camcorder equipped with a few advanced features that make it appealing. However, the performance of this camcorder, in terms of its video and still-image quality, leaves much to be desired. With a price difference of $1, the Canon ZR850 delivers slightly better image quality, and it’s similarly easy to use.” Link.
