Archos 404 Camcorder Reviews
CNET has a review of the Archos 404 camcorder, giving it a 7.7 out of 10: “Videos looked lovely on the colorful, 3.5-inch LCD screen: there was no jerkiness or overpixilation during viewing tests, sound synced up perfectly, and the screen was sufficiently large for lengthy (one to two hours) viewing. However, after we transferred some video files to the player, it would freeze whenever we tried to access them. We’re still waiting to hear back from Archos on this, but it sounds like something a firmware update might address. Photos taken with the 1.3-megapixel camera are about what you’d expect: not great. Test images were grainy and varied greatly depending on the direction of light sources. Short videos recorded with the camcorder were passable in that the 404 would do in a pinch, but it shouldn’t replace a standalone camcorder. … The uberversatile Archos 404 camcorder is a good option for anyone looking to buy a compact portable video player with a nice screen. It’s an OK convergence device, but it makes a far better video player than camcorder.” Link.
PCPro has a review of the Archos 404 camcorder and writes, “The standout feature is the tiny camera lens on the rear of the unit, although quality isn’t brilliant, with a minuscule lens and low 640 x 480 resolution. Colours are a little washed out and detail is generally lacking, but then thinking of the 404 as a way to archive precious moments for commemorative DVDs is to miss the point. The 404 Camcorder is a great tool for a video blogger, capturing swift two-minute video clips for later upload. … the 404 Camcorder is unique - the hard disk, large screen and camera take it far beyond the media capabilities of the most advanced phones and portable media players. Not everyone will find a use for it - if your needs are met by just one of the 404’s functions, you should look elsewhere, as it doesn’t do any one thing with particular panache. If you’re likely to make a habit of posting to YouTube or a video blog, though, the 404 is an intriguing product at the right price.” Link.
LaptopMag has a review of the Archos 404 camcorder and writes, “What makes the 404 stand out from other PMPs is its 1.3-MP camcorder. While shooting video in a number of environments (inside the office, in a convention hall, at home, outdoors), the 404 fared extremely well in natural light and in really bright indoor light. In low-light situations, the visuals became very grainy. On the plus side, the footage was quite smooth, as the 404 plays back video shot with the camera at 30 frames per second (at 640 x 480-pixel resolution). Those concerned about battery life need not worry; the Archos 404 Camcorder churned out a solid three hours and one minute of video on our tests. … If you’re on the hunt for an all-in-one convergence device, the Archos 404 Camcorder will fill the bill nicely. Although the integrated camera won’t replace the video quality produced by a true, standalone camcorder, it’s a handy tool if you want to travel light and shoot some footage to share with friends or post to YouTube.” Link.
Australian PC Authority has a review of the Archos 404 and writes, “But the 404 Camcorder is unique – the hard disk, large screen and camera take it far beyond the media capabilities of the most advanced phones and portable media players.
