Sony HDR-FX7 Press Release
Sony is expanding its high-definition camcorder line with the introduction of the HDR-FX7 1080i HDV camcorder, a model with three-chip ClearVIDâ„¢ CMOS Sensor technology to deliver exceptional high-def video and the utmost in creative control.
For videographers on the move, the new model sports a compact body design, weighing in at about three pounds. It is approximately 40 percent smaller and 25 percent lighter than Sony’s first prosumer HDV model.
Like previous HDV models, the HDR-FX7 can record and playback both 1080i HDV and standard definition DV video on standard miniDV tapes. Recorded HDV video can be conveniently edited with a choice of available HDV, non-linear editing software. Its HDMI interface offers simple, one-cord connection to compatible display devices so you can just plug and play into instead of struggling with multiple cables.
“Our ClearVID CMOS sensor is one of the core technologies used to ensure that customers enjoy the full 1080 HD experience,” said Linda Vuolo, director of marketing for camcorder products. “Advanced camcorder users will be impressed with the richer, more natural-looking video shot with the HDR-FX7 camcorder, especially when shooting outdoors, improved handheld shooting, and long recording times.”
The Power of 3ClearVID CMOSSensor Technology
The primary benefits of Sony’s ClearVID CMOS sensor are high-speed data transfer rates and lower power consumption, which is a real boon when handling data-rich, high-def video.
The new camcorder’s three-chip configuration combined with Sony’s originally-developed Enhanced Imaging Processor results in higher video resolution, greater light sensitivity with minimal picture noise, and more accurate color reproduction than previous Sony models. These combined technologies also bring added functions.
The HDR-FX7 camcorder has a smooth slow record function. With its three sensors, the HDR-FX7 model can capture a six-second burst of video and play it back in 24 seconds as slow motion video. The model’s dual record function allows users to capture 1.2-megapixel still images and shoot video simultaneously, with the press of a button.
Fueled by the Sony InfoLithium® L Series battery with STAMINA® technology, the model is highly power-efficient. Users can expect up to eight hours of continuous recording time with the optional largest capacity battery.
Get The Shot You Want At Any Angle
The HDR-FX7 camcorder sports a high-resolution viewfinder to accurately check composition, focus and image color. It also features a high-resolution, 3.5-inch SwivelScreenâ„¢ LCD screen with Clear Photo Plus LCDâ„¢ technology for superb contrast and accurate color reproduction.
Ideal for the mobile videomaker, the LCD can be tilted out and swiveled for comfortable viewing in any shooting position. Both the viewfinder and LCD screen can be turned on independently or simultaneously.
Zoom In and Out Like A Pro
The HDR-FX7 features a Carl Zeiss® Vario-Sonnar® T* lens with a 20x optical zoom range, equivalent to 37.4 - 748mm (35mm equivalent) in 16:9 widescreen mode. With its new digital extender function, the camcorder can magnify video footage 1.5 times greater, realizing a 30x optical zoom without significant degradation of picture quality.
To compensate for the HDR-FX7 model’s substantial zoom capability, Sony incorporated an extra-low dispersion lens glass in order to reduce color distortion. Its built-in Super SteadyShot® optical image stabilization helps to reduce shaky footage, even when shooting handheld at high zoom settings.
In addition to its superb high-def picture quality, the HDR-FX7 provides extensive manual controls for zoom, focus, shutter speed, white balance, iris, and gain.
Independent manual zoom and focus rings provide a high degree of manual control. Conveniently positioned directly behind the zoom ring, the model’s selectable exposure dial now adds iris, along with exposure and auto-exposure shift functions, so that users can easily adjust both gain and shutter speeds.
The HDR-FX7 will be available in October for about $3,500. Options will include a full line of accessories, including lights, lenses, microphones, InfoLithium® batteries, chargers and cables.
Both models will be available online at Sonystyle.com, at Sony Style® retail stores (www.sonystyle.com/retail), and at authorized dealers nationwide. Pre-orders will begin on Friday, Sept. 8 at www.sonystyle.com/handycam.
Sony HDR-FX7 Reviews
CamcorderInfo has a first impressions review of the Sony HDR-FX7 up, and concludes, “Sony’s HDR-FX7 is a very well designed camcorder, and it fills an important niche in the world of prosumer HDV. For $3500, it would be difficult to find a better camcorder, with terrific video performance, assignable buttons and all the most vital manual controls within easy reach. The Canon XH A1 may well offer more, and includes features lacking on the FX7, such as XLR inputs and some additional manual controls - but it will cost about $500 more. Sony has also shown that there is a strong demand for prosumer camcorders with a slightly scaled back feature set. The HVR-FX1 and the DCR-VX2100 are both popular camcorders and the HDR-FX7 should appeal to a similar group of users who want a camcorder that’s capable of producing professional results – but without the bells and whistles they don’t need. The HDR-FX7 does not shoot progressive scan video, lacks balanced audio inputs, and lacks the extensive gamma controls on camcorders like the HVR-V1U. It is an approachable, portable, and refined camcorder that handles like a typical Sony - and I found it just plain likable.” Link.
CamcorderInfo has a review up of the Sony HDR-FX7 and concludes, “It’s hard not to like Sony’s HDR-FX7, and only a few years ago we would have loved it. This is a camcorder that combines a solid suite of desirable features, accessible and well-tuned controls, and terrific bright-light video performance. The FX7’s distant ancestor, the DCR-VX1000 was popular in its heyday for the same reasons – and it had little in the way of real competition. The VX2000 and VX2100 managed to hold their own against upstarts like Canon’s GL and XL camcorders, and Panasonic’s AG-DVX100, despite the fact that they offered professional features like XLR terminals lacking on the Sonys. Sony’s VX camcorders remained popular because they cost slightly less, but still offered great video performance and key manual controls. Beachtek helped their cause by providing an economical way to add balanced audio making the VX cams credible professional tools. … Until Sony lowers the price of the HDR-FX7, we can’t give it a strong endorsement. The availability of the XH A1 makes the FX7’s $3500 MSRP seem a hefty price to pay for a “consumer†camcorder. Our advice is to hold off on buying an FX7 until Sony drops its price considerably – or to give the XH A1 some serious consideration.” Link.
Videomaker has a review of the Sony HDR-FX7 HDV camcorder and concludes, “The FX7 handles quite well, is comfortable to hold and has easy-to-access controls. We’re very pleased with the color and sharpness on an HD monitor. It performs well in low light situations, much like its predecessor, the VX2100. A drawback is that the onboard mic records decent stereo sound, but the option of plugging in a higher quality mic via XLR would be nice. The mini stereo mic input requires an adapter or mixer, which could introduce problems and interference.” Link.
CNET has a review of the Sony Handycam HDR-FX7 and writes, “Because of its weak audio options, as well as a lack of time-code controls and other editing-friendly essentials, I wouldn’t recommend the Handycam HDR-FX7 for budding indie filmmakers, despite the attractive price for those users. The admittedly more expensive Panasonic AG-HVX200 remains my top choice for prosumers who put the emphasis on “pro.” But if you want lots of video adjustment options and have only basic audio needs, the HDR-FX7 will can make a great HD starter camcorder for early-stage wannabes.” Link.
Broadcast Newsroom has a review of the Sony HDR-FX7 and writes, “The proof is in picture quality and functionality. Personally, I feel the control ergonomics are better than the FX1, but the use of CMOS slightly – ever so slightly – is not quite as good as the CCD based FX1. Many people I showed however – admittedly not power users – couldn’t tell the difference. Overall, I’d opt for the extra dollars and get the Canon XHA1 as the twin XLR’s make the difference to me, but if this is not important to you, then the FX7 certainly deserves a long hard look and play to see if it suits your needs.” Link.
