JVC Everio GZ-MG505
The JVC Everio GZ-MG505 sits at the top of the Everio G Series line because of its superior image quality, made possible by a 3-CCD imaging device that uses pixel-shift technology to deliver 5-megapixel quality. In addition to native full resolution 16:9 (1173 x 660 x3 effective pixels) and 4:3 DVD movie quality video with superior color rendition, this high-performance image sensor enables shooting of high-resolution JPEG photos of up to 2560 x 1920 pixels. And best of all, the hard disk’s high capacity means that nearly 10,000 photos can be shot without a second thought, with plenty of room left for hours of video, even at the highest quality settings. To take this many snapshots would require 416 rolls of 24-exposure film on a film camera, making the GZ-MG505 the ideal camcorder for vacations where travelling light is the priority.

JVC Everio GZ-MG505 Reviews
DigitalTrends has a review up of the JVC GZ-MG505 and writes, “the results? Better this go-round but no prize ribbon. Video had much less digital noise than previous Everios I used. In fact, it was like night and day, the results were so much better. Where this camcorder disappointed was its color rendition. Although it was reasonably accurate, there was no pop to the yellows or reds. And some things– such as a red float in a swimming pool–were just off. … There’s no question JVC had definitely made some progress with its hard-disc drive camcorders. By using three CCDs, annoying digital noise is greatly eliminated. The camcorder focuses quickly, is nicely designed other than a floppy lens cap but pure video quality leaves something to be desired. Colors really didn’t have much pop and in some cases were just plain off the target. And at this price, it’s tough to recommend.” Link.
CNET has a review up of the JVC Everio GZ-MG505 and writes, “Some of the usability features impressed me quite a bit. For instance, if you try to zoom in on a subject that’s too close for focusing, the lens automatically zooms back out until it can lock. Or if you’re far enough away but the lens can’t lock on anything, a manual focus indicator flashes, inviting you to deal with it yourself. And the easily accessed spot-meter mode lets you choose one of three different areas to meter, instead of just the middle of the frame; this capability is common in cameras but rare in camcorders. … A well-designed hard-disk-based camcorder, the JVC Everio GZ-MG505 produces video and stills that look great on TV. But its price might make you hit Pause.” Link.
CamcorderInfo reviews the JVC GZ-MG505 and writes, “It appears that our hopes, and the hopes of JVC, were more or less fulfilled. Though we found consistently poor image quality in most of the Everio camcorders over the last two years, the GZ-MG505 managed to buck the trend. Video performance looked great, though pros would likely classify this as far too saturated. Consumers want colors that pop, and these pictures pop like a Magnum. Who can blame them for meeting customer demands? … Overall, we still preferred the Sony DCR-SR100, their standard definition HDD camcorder, which had a sharper image and comparable ease of use. What it lacks in manual controls it makes up for with better automatic controls and more accurate color reproduction. The GZ-MG505 is, however, an unquestionable victor over the next Everio down the line, the GZ-MG77. The price jump might give the cash-strapped consumer pause, but the difference in quality between these camcorders is vast. Consider your investments wisely.” Link.
BusinessWeek has a review up of the JVC Everio GZ-MG505 and writes, “The camera captured the colors, sounds, and somehow even the feel of that day in a way I didn’t expect. … But then I tried to import all that feel-good footage onto my computer. My idea was to stitch together all the random vacation scenes into a movie, burn it onto a DVD, and send it to the friends with whom we traveled. I’ve been playing with this software for three days and still haven’t mastered anything close to that. The disk from JVC installed three programs onto my machine and it took me hours just to figure out which one does what. The manual hardly clears things up.” Link.
Trusted Reviews has a review up of the JVC Everio GZ-MG505EK and writes, “Although the MG505EK loses some of the pocket-friendly gadget appeal of the MC500EK, its bigger body solves one of its most significant issues too. Instead of hosting a 4GB Hitachi Microdrive for video storage, the MG50EK uses a 30GB 1.8in model instead, like its MZ-MG50EK predecessor. So rather than maxing out at one hour of video at the top Ultra Fine quality settings, the MG50EK can fit seven hours on its drive, which should be enough for most family holidays. … Taken on its own strengths, the JVC GZ-MG50E is a formidable package. Image quality is good, there is sufficient storage space for the lack of removable media not to be a problem at all, and the features are more than adequate if you don’t have semi-professional intentions. It’s the best hard disk camcorder we’ve seen so far. The main chink in the MG505E’s armour is that it shoots in standard definition, and high definition is rapidly gaining pace.” Link.
CEN reviews the JVC GZ-MG505U and writes, “The JVC GZ-MG505U ($1,299 list) provides very high quality video even in low light situations. At this price though, the new HDV-based camcorders could be had, some that record to traditional miniDV tape, and some that record to a hard drive, so there is a tradeoff. I was able to get very good video of a high school student singing during a holiday rehearsal with nothing more than a spotlight on her as she walked down the stage, with excellent results. … In another situation, a gray day at the beach, and without a tripod, capturing footage of some surfers, and using the full zoom function, the video quality was just acceptable. There was too much camera shake, the lighting was wrong, and the subject matter was moving faster than the singer. … Still image quality is very good. Sound quality is very good as well.” Link.
