JVC Single-Sided 8cm DVD-R Dual Layer (DL) Discs
JVC Press Release
Victor Company of Japan, Ltd. (JVC) today announced the upcoming release of the world’s first single-sided 8cm DVD-R Dual Layer (DL) disc1 for camcorders. The blank media is available in two versions as a VD-RDL26GU single disc pack or VD-RDL26GU3 three-disc pack.
The new single-sided 8cm DVD-R Dual Layer discs have a single-sided recording capacity of up to 2.6 gigabytes (GB), which is 1.8 times the recording capacity of conventional single-sided 8cm DVD-R single layer blank media. The new discs allow up to 55 minutes of continuous recording2 using the standard mode on DVD camcorders.
Major Features
1. World’s first camcorder single-sided DVD-R Dual Layer disc
Complies with DVD-R for DL Ver. 3.0, 4x Speed DVD-R DL Revision 1.0 standard. Manufactured using the latest technologies from JVC, including high sensitivity HD Dye recording material and precision M2 Stamper technology. The result is a disc that offers high reliability and playback compatibility in a camcorder DVD-R disc, making it ideal for the tough shooting conditions and demands of camcorder applications.
2. Up to 55 minutes2 of continuous recording or 1.8 times the capacity of single-sided DVD-R single layer blank media, without changing recording modes
Conventional single-sided 8cm DVD-R single layer discs offer up to 30 minutes of video recording using standard mode. In comparison, JVC’s single-sided DVD-R DL discs offer up to 55 minutes2 of continuous recording using the same standard mode, which is 1.8 times longer. Up to 110 minutes of continuous recording is possible using extended mode.
3. JVC’s own “Inverse Stack†fabrication process ensures high quality and stable performance from single-sided dual layer blank media
Employs JVC’s own “inverse stack†fabrication process and proprietary M2 Stamper technology using precision metal DVD stampers. These technologies are used during manufacturing to separately form the dual recording layers to an optimal shape, using a process that JVC calls “JM-form.†Each of these layers utilizes high performance HD Dye recording material, with each layer precisely inspected to achieve a single-sided, dual recording layer with superior recording characteristics and quality.
4. 100% Made in Japan for superior quality and high reliability
5. Proprietary Hard Coat technology for recording layer protection
JVC’s own Hard Coat technology provides excellent surface protection for recording layers by resisting scratches and dust build-up . Fingerprints can be easily wiped off.
Development Concepts
Camcorder models that record video to DVD discs or hard disk drives are enjoying a surge of popularity in the world market. Due to this popularity, demand for recordable 8cm DVD discs for DVD camcorders is projected at 26.6 million units in 2006, up 94% year-on-year. (Based on data released by the Japan Recording-Media Industries Association in November 2005.)
However, conventional single-sided 8cm DVD-R single layer media has a capacity of only 1.4GB or about 30 minutes of recording using standard mode on DVD camcorders. Consumers have indicated that the 30-minute capacity is too short and is worrisome when shooting precious footage in high quality mode. This can be a concern whether shooting key life moments such as the birth of a child or a child’s school entrance ceremony, or capturing special occasions such as a wedding ceremony or an overseas vacation as well as other moments of celebration. Double-sided 8cm DVD-R blank media can be used to record up to 60 minutes of video at 30 minutes per side, but have their drawbacks. The discs must be flipped over at the halfway point, which can lead to missed footage or accidents such as dropping the disc. Consequently, users of DVD camcorders increasingly desire longer recording times from a single DVD disk without sacrificing quality, or better quality without sacrificing recording times. Users have also expressed a desire for longer continuous recording.
Responding to these needs, JVC has developed and released the world’s first single-sided 8cm DVD-R Dual Layer (DL) disc with a capacity of 2.6GB, which is roughly 1.8 times the capacity of conventional single-sided DVD-R single layer blank media. The discs enable up to 55 minutes2 of continuous recording using standard mode on DVD camcorders. The single-sided DVD-R DL discs are available as a single disc pack (VD-RDL26GU) or three-disc pack (DV-RDL26GU3). All discs are 100% made in Japan for superior quality and high reliability.
